By the way, I am an independent, I'm not actually registered as a Republican. You know, I'm independent because of the fact that once you're a black Republican, you're considered Satan and all of that, and it's easier for me to talk as an independent, and instead of me calling myself a Republican, and they immediately raise up a cross trying to look at me as a vampire and all of that, but the point is, the Republican Party, by and large, and those on the religious right, those are the preachers and the liberators trying to tell the truth about what the democratic leadership, the Democrats are doing to black people. It's an amazing thing when you really look at it, but they're all mentally ill. It's a mental sickness. The Bible actually calls them fools because they're rebelling against virtue and God. Now, I'm not calling them fools. I'm just saying the Bible calls them fools. That's what they are.

I grew up in the Detroit area, and lived downtown (on Trumbull just north of the old Tiger stadium) for about 3 years. My roomates were 2 black guys.

There has been plenty of racism that has hurt black folks, but these days, they are their own worst enemy. And their drug dealers, the Democrats, keep them high (and powerless) on a drug called money.

I typically vote Democrat, but I find this one of the most distasteful aspects of the party platform.

Cam, no one is denying the sad history of racism and oppression that blacks have suffered in this country. And no one would deny that some Americans still hold racist views. HOWEVER, having lived around black folks, you find that blacks can be just as racist against whites. And given the social changes that have occured in this country since the 1950s, it is tough blame the plight of under privilaged black on racism.

Have you ever meet rich white kids who are a total waste? They value nothing, and spend their lives lusting after one material object after another. Strangely, you find the same true of poor people (yes, sometimes black) on welfare. They don't value money, don't understand money, and are satisfied with being treated like children as long as the money keeps flowing.

I firmly believe that many government programs are some of the greatest tools of racist oppression the world have ever invented, and Democrats frequently support these policys.

There is a small minority which piss away their welfare money and abuse the system, but it is no more than that - a small minority. Telling a group in poverty they are responsible for their own plight without (genuinely) offering the tools to assist them out of it is insulting. At best, I think what you say is partly true, and not very helpful.

Unfortunately, I know that you (and others) will read what I just read an violently disagree on a number of things. I don't know that there is much future in arguing it - it is clearly ideological differences (and I don't have the time to try and muster a well-researched defence).

Mybe I'll try another tack. The problem isn't so much the reference to poor people being their own worst enemy (which has some truth to it). It is the racial distinction within poor people which pisses me off. Are black people their own worst enemy? Or is it poor people? Or only poor black people?

You are less different than you think. Although, probably more arrogant (why are "we" the out of touch one?). There is actually quite a lot of world outside the US. Between us, the remainder of the western world has more people and similar problems to the US, spread across a wide political spectrum.

I don't nessecarily think foreigners are ignorant of American culture, but understanding a culture as a native and understanding through a media lens is quite different. It does not matter if the media is extremely high quality.

I can research the plight of indigienous peoples in Austrailia, but I think I would be operating without all of the facts if I have not lived in Austrailia for sometime and seen the realitys on the ground.

I don't disagree - the thing is that the same attitude exists in NZ and Australia (and probably Europe) as I read here - that [pick a minority over-represented in poverty/crime/welfare/etc] are their own worst enemy.

So I feel I can at least draw some conclusions.

(edit) By the same token, the US is so large and (from what I understand) state policies are sufficiently varied that just because someone know how it works in one state doesn't automatically follow that the same applies in another.

Ok mul - I'm going to keep asking this. Show me which media sources are owned by left wing groups or govts (as you've claimed in another thread) and compare their impact/circulation to the rupert empire & other private companies (which no one would call left leaning - surely).

Lets see some evidence of left wing bias that you're always whinging about. Could it simply be that the right media overseas is simply not as far to the right as the us's? Just a thought.
