frickin' british...
So a couple weeks back there was the gas leak, which I fixed myself (only gas in the eye and a sliced thumb necessary). Today I notice a "bad smell" and look down to see drops of oil on the ground. Gee, that's special. Goddam Triumph...it should be covered under warranty but the damn thing has 6K miles on it in 7 months and now this is the second time it has gone down. I'm thinking when its fixed I might trade it for a Japanese bike or maybe a bmw if I've got the budget. I fear that a Duc might be somewhat the same as my Triumph wrt maintenance...I just want to ride the damn thing every day and not worry about it.
What is the deal with my vehicle karma? The Subie is *still* at the body shop waiting on parts they didn't catch on the first go round (over 1.5 months now without that). The 4-runner which I borrowed now has the tranny on its last legs, popping out of 2nd and 4th (and now 3rd). Knock on wood the 911 is still going strong. Although I've got a few new creaks in it. Funny about lotsa track days... |

I've never understood (other than perhaps insurance reasons) why it takes so long to get parts for cars in a body shop...grrr. |

maybe this week. What kills me is I just sent off *another* car payment for something I haven't driven in going on 2 months. Arrghghgh.... |
You know why the brits don't make TV's ?
They can't figure out how to make them leak!!! |
if leaks din't bother you, i'd suggest a harley.
|
Oil leaks?
You DO OWN a 911, right? |
As I remember right from the NATO thread you were looking for a bike with style, attitude, something out of the ordinary. The Triumph and Duc fit the bill. If you wanted reliability and a clean garage floor a Jap bike should have been your target, but they didn't float your boat.
My S3 goes in on Thursday for a 6K service and an oil leak out of the right side case... |
Mmm, I suppose that now we should start on British electrics? Nah, way too easy!!! :D Ducs are no where near as tempremental as the Triumph, but maintenence costs, that's a whole different story.
|
oil leaks don't bug me. spewing oil does. I think it lost about a half quart already...it is not good. at this point i'd consider a japanese bike if I knew it wouldn't end up in the shop all the time. seems like maybe ducs are more predictable...you know the intervals of cash outlay. what is killing me is the time disruption when the bike goes down.
oh well...i'll figure it out and if it pisses me off enough i'll trade it on something else...duc or bmw maybe. |
Oil barons pay the auto/bike industry to engineer pre-determined oil leaks at specific intervals.
I'm sure of it. |
SUZUKI!!!!!
17k on the Intruder and only oil changes and one set of plugs. Could use the carbs tuned in the near future. All the style and attitude one could want. I can post some pictures later if you like. |
With a Duc it depends. The scheduled stuff is expensive, but there are electrical issues with some as well that aren't so scheduled. I don't think as a rule they would be as frustrating as the Triumph has been for you.

Aprilia Falco.
The reliability stories I've heard about this bike are amazing... |
6K on the GS and not a single problem. Went in for first maint. at 600 miles, and is due here pretty soon, but the thing is damn reliable...

This comes as no surprise to me. Friends with Triumph's and Ducati's have 10x the problems of friends with Japanese bikes. I had more issues with a BMW in one year than I had in 9 years of Suzuki's and Honda's.
But the Aprillia's sound like a neat package. Is the Falco now called the Tuono? Always liked the Tuono. |
Tuono is their naked bike. The Falco was a half-faired and slightly detuned version of the Mille. They quit making it in '03. The rotax v-twin is pretty legendary as a bombproof motor.

Sounds more like unfortunate timing with both the Subie and 4Runner not available. Wonder if you would be more relaxed about the Triumph if you had a fallback position given the oil leak is probably under warranty? If not then why gamble with the Aprilla? How many dealers/shops around your area work on those? How hard is it getting parts for them? If you're still wanting a daily rider then I say Jap bike all the way.

yeah, if I wasn't transpo-challenged right now it wouldn't be so bad, but I've come to depend on the bike, so I want one that runs without incident.
I'll have to ponder going Japanese...but first need to get the Triumph fixed. Shame because I really like the bike...when its running ;) |
