Anyone living in Glendora? How is this place for a young family? Looking to rent a 3+ bedroom 2 bath house with 2+ car garage. Glendora seems affordable (compared to Arcadia, Monrovia or Sierra Madre which are other choices.) I already checked it out on city-data.com and it looks okay by the data.
Expect more SG valley questions here soon. ![]() George Last edited by aigel; 01-05-2008 at 02:29 PM.. |

Its OK, never lived there. It gets hot in the summer. Smog is pretty high there too, especially in the summer. Where would you be driving to work? If into LA area, expect lots of traffic.

Work would be 10 miles on surface streets or 12 miles on the interstate. I doubt its cooler or less smoggy in Arcadia, Monrovia or Sierra Madre?

I grew up in Glendora. Moved there in 1958. Where in Glendora are you going to rent? There is ALOT of old money in Glendora. The 1940s Stripper Sally Rand once lived in Glendora as well as the actor Woody Strode, Van Halen Bass or Drummer, Richard Nixons 1st Cousin, the Rain Bird Sprinkler Corp Founder (corp was founded and based there) among others.
Glendora today is an upscale bedroom community, that is nestled in the foothills the old town has a very viable and upscale business district and the town is still the quiet place it always has been. It really hasn't changed except for becoming more upscale. The schools are very good for public schools. Above Foothill Blvd is the best, below a little less so. Below ALosta (old Route 66) has come up, it is part of the Lone Hill school District. You really can't go wrong living in Glendora.. Glendora Mountain Road...

I know Arcadia, Monrovia and Sierra Madre really well. Of the 3 only Sierra Madre is a place I would live. However Glendora in my opinion beats them all out. Not only for cost, but in lifestyle and surrounding area. Glendora is a throwback to the 1950s. The town above Alosta has not really changed since then, it is still the quiet sleepy place it has always been

Sierra Madre and Live Oak...was where I grew up..Sold Avacados on the corner.. 2 for 25 Cents. They were bigger than softballs. Made so much money on em..Mother said.."Sheet man lets load up the trunk and head on down to the swap-meet and sell em...Sold out quick...
In todays money it would be about $20 an hour...for a 12 year old kid that was great money.

My daughter goes to school at an all girls high school in Glendora. Since she's been there I have grown to love the place!

Tabs,
You're right, nice area. I live in Rancho Cucamonga (slightly east) and would live in Glendora or Sierra Madre in a second. The new 210 freeway is close and now extends east to the 215. George ...you can't go wrong..IMHO...Go for it.. ![]() Bob

IIRC, Glendora is right next to Pomona, and you can hear the dragsters at the Winter and Spring Nationals at the raceway.

The races are held on the West side of LA Fair Grounds..the parking lot is where the Pomona Car Swap Meet is held. Growing up I used to hear the Irwindale Raceway Drag races.

I lived in Alta loma for 13 years..1990 to 2003... Saphire (above Banyan) and Throughbred are the cross streets..I lived where they have Christmas Tree Lane...I had a 3000 sq ft Gary Miller home.. All 1/2 acre lot with horse trails. (horse property). Very quiet up there. Never going to really change. I had an opportunity to buy a lot in the King Ranch for 130K..very top of Carnelian (Almond) .just above the Sam Maloof museum. Gated community backed by the National Forest...37 houses... 5000 sq ft minimum according to CCRs ....the planes coming into Ontario airport look like toys from up there. One of the big regrets of my life is not buying that lot and building a custom home on it. Or I coulda sold in for some real bank..

Lived for many years in Temple City and went to school in Arcadia and Glendora. Very nice near the foothills. Tabs is right: you will love Glendora Mountain Road, Azusa Canyon, East Fork, many great roads close by.

Sounds pretty positive - reconfirming what my impression was so far.
Isn't it all national forest up there? That's one of the top requirements - being close to the SG mountains. I haven't even looked at other towns like Diamond Bar, Walnut etc. Is there an airport (even hobby type) close by that adds a lot of noise? I drove around in Glendora for about 15 mintues and liked the area off Loraine Ave. north of Foothill. What stood out was: Older, well kept homes on large (for CA) lots. Mature trees and landscaping. Wide roads with bike lanes! (Unseen in any other town out there!) Large public library. Old downtown area with shops and restaurants. The area seems big enough that it shouldn't be a problem to find a decent rental before school starts after summer. If you have any leads to a rental, let me know. Please also, if you have more input, fire away! Thanks!!! George |

The area IS nice, and I wasn't trying to disparage it. But its definitely in a hot, dry area. Yes, butt up on the SG mountains. If your going West in the mornings to work, expect lots of traffic, ditto going home at night. I love Sierra Madre, lots of craft built homes.

Sierra Madre Elementary is pretty crappy, according to city-data. (65 points out of 100, while Glendora has 3 Elementary schools with over 90 out of 100 points). Rent in Sierra Madre is roughly $800-1000 more a month than in Glendora for the same size house. I get to work fairly late and stay late, so traffic should not be a big issue. However, before I decide, I will drive to work in the a.m. from Glendora and see for myself how bad it is. I'll do it a couple times and compare the surface street and the interstate route. Biking is also an option, but it may be for people with a death wish only, since bike lanes seem to be an unknown concept in the area overall.

You know the answer to that.
I lived in La Verne...right down Foothill/Alosta. Funny, now I live at the other end of Route 66.
