Thats exactly the point. No one wins. It leads to fragmentation of the internet. Rather than being able to sell to a global markets, vendors would have to deal with all sorts political crap to get their products into a market.

The potential is there that countries could in effect put up 'borders' and regulate commerce just as if a company were local. Imagine the corruption and inane regulation that could come into play in corrupt countrys.

"Isn't this like deciding that you're going to start using base-16 for your phone numbers?"

No. Its like giving people a phone book with entirely different phone numbers. They look up Best Buy in the phonebook, but when they call, its an entirely different company who has paid the local government for using the phone number....and NAME! The Best Buy corporation would of course be pissed, but because it would be effectively out of their jurisdiction, they would have no legal recourse.

So. Putting up borders would help them how? So why would they do it? And why should we care?

Awesome! Yet another reason to shut them off.

I can see it now: private leased lines running between the USA and outsourced businesses globally, supply-chain networks established over a proprietary data channel, and everyone else at the mercy of being redirected to whatever backwater knockoff of a US domain name, with no products, no pricing, no customer service, no followup, no nothing!

I'd like nothing more than to see the EU go dark rather than to submit a US innovation to foreign "consensus management."

It would help them because they could:

A) charge sales tax and/or tarrifs on those that wanted to sell in their environment

B) censor content. MANY nations have made it perfectly clear that they intend to censor what people will be allowed to see.

C) take big bribes from local scum bags to block out foreign competition

We should care because American business has the strongest presence on the internet, and the biggest investment in the technology. If we start losing markets.....not good. Its also not good because countrys who hate us can censor content to defame us as they see fit.

while you're worrying about things, here's something to add to the fire:

btw, we've done the "alternate reality" experiment using backpack wireless routers with DNS routing of our choosing. Makes for a very disconcerting experience, especially if you chose to "hack" the sites, keeping them close to the original.

I notice Island 911 never came back.

I guess he spit his pathetic load then ran off when he realized how out gunned he was intellectually.

:D geez, I swat at your, YET another Bush bash, this AM and come back to read all this?

Yeah, Josh . . . I have a long history of always running away from an argument.

Furthermore, your skillful ignoring of the points I raised, to float your own ad hominem, was a stroke of brilliance  I could not dream to match.

Seriously; you chime in an hour and a half after my post . . .. then claim that I'm not coming back to respond . . .WTF? Do I need to eh'splain how people use the internet, to ya?

. . .See, Josh, time allowing, it works like this. ...http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/yltype.gif (oh please, Josh, excuse my use of such sophomoric emoticons  . . .but I do feel the need to type at your level. )

island911 10-07-2005 09:19 PM

Well JOSH . .. ?

It's Friday here, after a long, busy week .. ..I've got half my brain tied behind my back, so lets get it going.

Do tell; just why do you suggest the US roll over? . ...because of my "pathetic load"? . . . or because of my "adolecent tripe" ?

Your arguments here are as compelling as they are focused.

island911 10-07-2005 09:20 PM

Not responding, eh?
