Yes, that is very early.

Thats the end of leisurely lying around with a beer and a magazine when watching the youngster...

So once they're walking, what's better--invisible fence or some sort of tether?

That is an early walker for sure. 10 and 12 months for my 2 sons. Fence should work, not the invisible ones with the zapper though.

My son could stand at 3 months (got pictures) and was running around behind push toys at 6 months. Didn't officially "walk" until 9 months. My daughter, on the other hand, didn't walk until 17 months.

two young boys are getting ready to go into the operating room. The first boy asks the second "What are you having done?" The second boy says"i'm having my tonsils out". The first boy say's "Well good luck with that". The second boy ask's the first the same question "What are you having done"? The first boy say's "i'm getting circumcised". The second boy grimmaces and say's " Good luck with that. I had it done when I was a newborn and I couldn't walk for 8 months".
I'm sure 8 months is very early. Maybe you have a future track star on your hands.

... I never understood the fascination with how early they start walking.......

...but an electric fence works great for keeping them in the yard.

What I'm interested in is how soon they start earning a living...
