Thumbs up Southern CAL freeways

Just spent 2 1/2 weeks in So Cal.

Traffic really moves on the weekends.
90 mph was the norm, loved the flowing curves of I-5 and 6-7 lanes available(!) as well as minimal places for police to hide. 2 car pool lanes.

Huge freeways. Bet they suck during the week, but for high speed motoring they were a ton of fun in the rental !

Which So Cal did you visit? I've never heard of anything like that happening, Craig. Perhaps you were out at 3 AM?

Going from LA to San Diego last weekend at 11:00 am.

Maybe I got lucky and everyone was hauling a$$ because they were totally amazed?

I like the official yellow & black freeway sign by the ocean (powerplant?) showing a man holding the hand of a woman and child while apparently running across the freeway.

Chilling.

Must be a story about that one -

Great roads in Los Angeles...90 is quite frequently the norm at non-peak times (excepting the big freeways)...When those are packed you can get up in the hills above Malibu and have near wide-open roads, or you can go up to Angels Crest Highway...Off peak hours, late night driving, there are some awesome massive sweepers, sometimes going through tunnels, and interchanges that will leave you wanting to turn around and do it again...Even Sunset Blvd (between the 405 and PCH) can be a hoot later at night (scouting and experience suggested before anything above 50 mph).

My favorite run is Sepulveda to Mulholland, all the way over to the east end, where it runs into the 101.

Yea, the sign is a warning of the illegals running across the freeway to avoid the immigration inspection station.

About 8 or 10 years ago, illegals were getting run over and killed in that strech like crazy... it was ugly for awhile.

So you drove past Camp Pendleton at about 80-90 mph. Not bad. 110 to 120 mph is more the norm.

I posted a thread a couple of years ago about returning from the L.A. area in the afternoon. Traffic was cruising 95, but the scarry thing was that it was bumper to bumper and everyone was driving that fast. Some people were tailgating others and passing at more than 100 mph. The day after that, I heard on the news a tanker truck had been in a big crash and traffic had been held up for hours and hours. I decided to avoid that stretch as much as possible.

Geez, I spent 3 hours driving from north OC to Palm Desert on Saturday. It's only a 65 mile freeway trip. When traffic is backed up in the desert I really don;t see any hope for resolving traffic issues in the city.

One of my freeway commute bikes ('82 Sabre 750) gets a bark to the exhaust at 85 or so. I am always amazed when I am moving with the flow (paying attention to things other than the speedo), and hear the bark. Looking down, see 90, and think 'That can't be right....' It usually is.

I was on the Gold Wing this morning, southbound 405 in Long Beach (against the commute direction). Was in the 5th lane, doing 100. People passing me like I was lollygagging.

Gotta love it here on a holiday commute.

Tomorrow to LAS and back on the GL. 4 hours each way, the usual weekday (middle of the week) time.

San Onofre... has a nude beach as well.

That stretch of freeway is the usual spot that I open up the 944 almost all the way 120+ ...
I used to commute from San Diego (north county) to LA (dwtn/OC/Glendale)every day.

Memorable drive for me was coming home with wife from Santa Barbara. We were in my 86 Carrera, car pool lane, through Anaheim south on the I-5. I actually had to pull over and let the Ford Expeditions past at 100+ mph. Carrera never felt stable at speed - my F150 truck feels better - did not hear the end of that for a while from the wife..."nice sports car...."

We should really think about building some of those overpass walkways for those people.

Do you think there are roadsigns like this up in Washington State? (sans the gunman, of course)

Here in Bellingham it is near culture shock...You get so used to Mexicans as mechanics, fast-food employees, gardeners, etc., in L.A. (Tijuana Norte), not here buddy...White kids mostly working their way up the food chain the good ole' fashioned way...No molestation at Home Depot or day-laborer mobs whatsoever.

CCPs keep the crime rate on the down-low.

So does that mean I hear a Canadian accent through the speaker at Taco Bell?
