More Farm Antics

Beans are in, record yields! Corn has just started and the yields look great. Below are some pics of our long weekend in Iowa.

Cool. Having lots of cousins playing on the farm was a great way to grow up.

Not in Illinois. The bean crop just barely made it and the corn...they'll be lucky to make cattle feed out of it. The corn was only about 5' tall this year!

Great that you can share the experience with your kids.
I should be taking my soybeans off next week...or the guy I pay to "machine hire" will be taking them off. I only farm about forty acres so it is not practical to own a combine!
The cool thing is he let's the kids "swim in the beans" after he loads the tractor trailer. Simple pleasures.

He got about 65-70 bu/acre in beans and ave about 185-190 bu/acre of corn. They got the beans in at a good water weight before the frost and the corn was coming in at abot 16-17%. Less dry time and the co-op is taking it in at that. Means free money for selling a little water.

Ave cost per acre now in Iowa is $4000/acre. 5 years ago it was $1500. I told my wife back then we should have bought a block - told her it would only go up. Guess what she heard for 30 min on the ride home!
