Liberals and Conservatives
Liberals and Conservatives on this Board wind up yelling at each other neither side really listening to each other. The problem between the political ideologies doesn't really exist . They are really barking up the wrong tree. The real problem is that the system has become so large it's unwieldy. The wealth and power of this nation has corrupted the system. Unfortunately like any house of cards when the house of cards becomes to top heavy it will collapse. Until too late it will be business as usual and nothing will or can be done. There is too much greed and self interest along with complacency that nothing can destroy the system.

Sorry I don't buy it. I'm not that pessimistic about government, or about the state of democracy.
And there are in fact significant differences in political/social viewpoints of real people. Not that these viewpoints can't co-exist, of course. Some would argue that those differences make us stronger, more diverse, tougher. And no doubt that politicians use these differences for their own ends -- namely to gather more power. In that sense, you are right. they play us like violins. But denying our very real differences will not bring us any closer together, it will just stop us from talking about them. If that happens, we will be in real trouble.

You sound like a liberal, Tabs. Yes, I share your concern. Greed and self interest. The haves and the have nots. The elimination of the middle class. The bilking of the taxpayer. It's all about money and power. Instead of people.
And many folks here will be very defensive. They'll repeat their simplistic fantasy that we'd have Utopia if the gubmint would just go away and let the lazy asses drown while the go-getters scoop up all the resources. the go-getters are scooping up all the resources, and that's going to be a problem.

STOP MAKING SENSE!
Interesting, tabs has not been able to infuriate with hyperbole lately so he is resorting to logic and wisdom.

I really wish we had at least 4 viable parties in this country.
Under the current system, you have to pick a core issue (or two) that is most important to you, pick the party that aligns with you on that issue, and turn a blind eye to all of the other ways you disagree with your party on all other issues. Of course, you know that if you give ground to the other party on a non-core issue, you are also essentially giving ground on your core issue. So you have to fight for all of your party's stances on issues just not to give up ground on your core issue...

Ouiet simply Special Interests donate money to both Political Parties. So no matter which side wins the election it is beholding to the Special Interest. The size of the Federal and State Bureaucracys is massive., which makes for an unwieldy governmental services organization. Also the amount of Taxes collected is massive which leads to squabbles as to which projects get funded. Now that the budget is stretched a little tighter, the fight for the remaining resources has become more vicious (we ain't as rich as we were back in the 1960's when everybody could get their Pork).
We have come to expect too much from government. Which is fine when Government is taking in more than it is spending. However we have lost the flexibility of cutting back when the revenue doesn't match the spending. Nobody is willing to give up their subsidy, the attitude is let the other guy cut back, our program is essential. So it will continue to be business as usual.

Gore Vidal said, " in 1948 the USA ceased to be a Repblic and became a National Security State." Meaning that the National Security trumphed the process of Democracy. The CIA is not held accountable to anyone nor anything. They get to keep their secret operations in the name of National Security.

More than a few I'm afraid. Politics is like the entertainment biz (music, movies, TV). These industries attract all types. Besides the ones who want to help in public service and/or perform in entertainment, there are many, many more who are attracted by power, greed and fame. The entertainment industry can absorb these types with little effect on us. Not so in politics when the cumulative effect of so many bozos can impact so many people's lives here and elsewhere. We don't have it (at least not overtly), and it would really, really piss the populace off it was happening. I'm talking about the big lobby groups which spend huge sums of money telling the politicians how to think. I sort of see it as corrupt... If I'm wrong about how it works, I apologise. It is how it seems from the outside looking in.
