Paint sprayer Recommendations?

My wife and I are looking to buy a paint sprayer for use inside our house. You guys seem to be the most knowledgable group of people I know, so I figured I would ask your advice.

We've really only shopped them on line and it seems the more information we find, the more questions we come up with. I've used Binks sprayers before, while in the Corps, but this was inside a hangar designed for painting aircraft. We have no plans of spraying anything like poly-urethane paints, so...

Anyway, we've come up with a few possibilities, what do you think?

The AccuSpray 23K Series

or...

The Wagner Paint Crew

Mainly, this would be used for interior painting of walls and ceilings, but if possible, I'd like to use it for staining and/or sealing a deck, fencing, etc.

Any advice, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Randy

Randy,

Really depends on how much fence/deck you have. I own a Campbell Hausfeld airless sprayer, see the link, but I spray a lot of barns and fence.
I've owned it for ten years with no worries at all. The C/H folks have a wide range of sprayers, one may fit your needs.
More is better when it comes to these things, btw. Don't be shy.
All the best.

Morgan

I can only comment on the Wagner paint crew as I own one.

I painted the entire outside of my Stucco 3/2/2 home in less than 3 hours. Clean up is easy and its easy to use.

We plan on lugging it up to our new house in NC this spring to paint the entire thing inside and out.

It was the best $200 I ever spent. I HATE painting and the paint crew actually made it more enjoyable.

I would not use an airless sprayer inside unless the house is stripped of floor coverings. The masking is a lot of work. I think you would find good use on fencing and decks. For exteriors in siding, my limited experience has shown spraying is definitely inferior to a roller and brush. Sprayed paint doesn't adhere as well.

The sprayer is indeed nice for ceilings, but you must be careful of overspray. For walls, the sprayer is no huge advantage. When spraying, I've found it's best with two people. Well, give those two rollers and you can cover walls pretty quickly. The trim and cut-in will eat your time, and not the walls.

I bought a pro level airless sprayer about 5 years ago and use it on my rentals. I use it less as the years go by.

I would use the sprayer for:
ceilings (assuming the house is cleared and has no carpet)
trim (if the house is bare and has no carpet)
primer on floors
painting trimwork before installation (sprayer is über nice here)
doors removed from the hinges and outdoors

I would use a roller and brush for:
walls
exterior paintwork
walls and trim

I bought a contractor grade airless from my local paint store. It was one of their rental machines, which they replace often, especially at the end of summer. It has run flawlessly for several years now. I wouldn't ever go back to a "homeowner" grade machine. Either get a good one, or rent one for a day whenever you need one.

I agree w/ Dantilla about renting a good one for occasional use. There are basically two different types of sprayers for residential use, the airless and the HVLP. The airless puts on a ton of paint fast, (depending on it's rating/capacity), but generally wastes material through overspray. (Hence their unsuitability for interior work in an occupied house). The HVLP type requires a compressor but is a lot more "surgical", they are used for cabinets/trim/etc...

I am running out now, but PM me your # if you want Randy and I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Agreed, I would never use a sprayer for interior work.

I've used a compressed air sprayer/pressure pot system for interior work very successfully. I agree with the need to mask off quite a bit.

More recently I've found that using an 18" roller and extendable paint pole makes large rooms and high ceilings short work.

Here are details from another thread:

"If you have a compressor then you could buy a pressure paint tank and spray your house. I bought one at Sears years ago and did a friend's entire townhouse interior, then used it on my homes interior 8 years ago. I don't see why it wouldn't work great on the outside. BTW, I used an old 1 HP/13 gallon Sears compressor which worked perfectly. That and 50 feet (x2) of light weight air and paint hose, and an old (Sears/Devilbiss) spray gun head and you're in business. You can even place a gallon paint can in some models and avoid most of the mess.

Also, consider the possible legalities when removing the old paint. If lead is present MA may require a certified individual/organization to remove....kind of like with asbestos.

I bought the Wagner Paint Crew from http://www.gleempaint.com/paint-crew-770-recon.html

Reconditioned for $99

I primed with Kilz and painted the celings in the entire house in 4 hours (~1550 square feet)

Yes it is a pain to mask everything off - but it's also nice to have full coverage - and no paint brush marks.

WOW! Lot's a great info! Thanks, fellas! This forum never fails to give out so much more than what is asked for.

That Pressure Pot system is very intriguing. However I decide to go, one of the considerations I need to follow is that it be extremely light-weight. My wife insists that she be able to use it so having the paint reservoir separate from the gun is a must.

I'm pretty much wide open as to what kind of system I should get. I've got a compressor that should be up to any tasks I can throw at it.

Denis, sent you a PM.

Randy

I bought the Wagner Paint Crew to paint the rooms in our house just before we sold it earlier this year. One thing that you may not know is that the Paint Crew has an optional roller attachment that works very well. I knocked out those rooms in record time without the typical mess I make when I paint inside. I highly recommend it.
