I grew up racing motocross - got my first bike, an 83 YZ60, as an xmas gift in 1984, and raced off and on up til I was 16. I have not ridden dirt in years, though a few weeks back a friend let me borrow his 01 CR125 and it was a lot of fun...

My first street bike was at age 21, I bought a 1990 FZR400 and took the MSF course, MSF advanced rider course, and a few track days.

Over the last 6 years I've had the FZR400, a 94 ducati 900SS, and a 96 Honda VFR750F. While currently bikeless, I am considering an SV650S for next year. I miss the Duc, but not its quirks.

Actually, the 900SS is probably the 2 wheeled equivalent of the classic 911's....

I think an 01-02 carb'd SV650S with some mild suspension upgrades would be perfect.

What are you guys riding?

My younger brother just picked up a SV track Whore. With Penske/Traxxion suspension goodies for very cheap. WERA & CCS guys have been racing the cr@p out of them. You can find some fully prepped bikes dirt cheap at WERA http://forums.13x.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=48

I on the other hand went halfway exotic and tracked down a Aprilia RS 250

deathpunk. moved to san fran, and realized a big jacked up jeep was not the best bet for parking. so i bought a used honda 500 interceptor. i was instantly hooked. so i sold it and stepped up to a honda F4 600. kept that for awhile and bought a duc 900CR, old ZX7. and then cleaned house. i kept the F4 right up until some idiot took an illegal u-turn in front of me, and made me jam my leg between his steel bumper and car. i sheared the fasteners and sent the bumper flying. i almost cut my let in two. i just about parked the bike with the kickstand down, but i passed out too fast. hahahahah. oh well. 5 years later...hmmmm that new ninja ZX6R sure is nice. buy one. riding around, i watch a car run my buddy over, and collapse his lungs.. sold the ninja. bought a 911...fast forward. i now have a honda F4i in my garage that i regularly charge up. i registered it PNO, but i am getting the itch again. a buddy gave me this bike. i may buy the yama FZ1 from my bro or pick up one of the big beemers. i have a long commute coming up. but i admit, i dont love bikes anymore.

the guy with the collasped lung? i watched him do his second track day at thunderhill about 2 months ago. huge guy, maybe 275 lbs on a loaner gxrer, he had his knee puck down and was smoking the rubbers! he was faster than most of the guys out there. i think he missed his calling. (plus his physical size) he should have gone pro.

1976 H-D Sportster with Wiseco 10:1 pistons, heads by Cliff Branch, Andrews R5 cams, S&S Super E carb, 1 3/4' drag pipes, Barnet clutch, and Andrews first and second gears. Bought in 1980 as my third H-D at the ripe old age of 19.

2000 H-D Road King, pretty much stock. 68,000+ miles since I bought it new. Luxury long-distance land yacht.

Yep, if my neighbors complain about the 911, I just fire up the '87 Sportster (drag pipes), and I can't hear 'em b**ch'in about the car any more! Sounds like a lot of fun you got there Jeff....

ps: What is it about air cooled motors? All my toys seem to have them...car, bike, boat... I just need to stay away from Tim Hancock, or I'm a goner :)

Custom Rodriguez frame and fork built w/ True Temper OX Platinum double butted cromoly tandem tubset, front and rear rack braze-on's, front and rear cantilever bosses, chain hanger, custom bottle opener brazed to seat stay, three water bottle braze-on's, custom light metallic blue paint w/ three panel masks in white, full Campagnolo Veloce drivetrain, Velocity Deep V 36 hole rims w/ Phil Wood hubs and DT double butted stainless steel spokes, Phil Wood bottom bracket, DiaCompe cantilever brakes, Conti Top Touring 32mm Kevlar bead tires, 58cm drop bars w/ campy cork tape, Sachs chain, Avid stem, Cat Eye lighting system, old beat up pair of Shimano 747 clip in pedals (sacreligous to put Shimano on this bike, I know)...etc.

The second one is being built as I type this. I can't wait for spring to get here. ;)

Raced motocross, 250 B class until 1991 (injuries were getting in the way of working for a living). Qualified and competed in Lorreta Lynn's US Amatuer Nationals in 1989 & 1990.

I have had dirtbikes for 34 of my 39 years and a street bikes for 23 years.

Of all the adventure and motorsports (flying, skiing, autocrossing, go-cart racing, whitewater kayaking, BMX, snowmobiling) I have been involved with over the years, nothing compares to sitting on the line with the 30 second card turned sideways awaiting the gate to drop.

Amatuer MX is a form of racing that mandates balls and skill to win, with the machine being only a small determining factor in the outcome of the race.

cool. I never went to loretta's but have friends that did and some of the guys I rode with in the 125b class in NESC are still at it (and a few have qualified for a few nat'ls/sx's)

And I agree about the bike not mattering a helluva lot. I rode a box stock YZ80 when they were considered the weakest bike in the class and I still stomped people.

Ride my '86 VFR700 almost daily now. I've got a Kerker pipe on it; the howl makes my neckhairs stand on end. Sounds like 1/2 of a Ferrari 360.

A friend of mine has many 2 stroke bikes, including an RZ530, RZV500, Gamma 500 etc...

i've got an 02 sv650s like you're looking at getting and it's a great bike!

The only problem is there's a really slippery slope on this bike just like the 911. I wanted suspension mods and ended up with gsxr750 front forks, billet triple clamp, gsxr 1000 brakes (12 pots baby!) on dual 320mm rotors, ohlins rear suspension, woodcraft clipons and rearsets, Yoshi pipe and of course K&N and rejetting, as well as 46 tooth sprocket and 520 chain conversion. Oh, and GPR damper.

The cheap buy in price of the bike doesn't matter when you spend thousands on the suspension and brakes. However, I have a bike that handles better than most - is fully adjustable, has HUGE brakes, is really easy to work on, and super easy and fun to ride. I've got plenty of torque, but if I want more HP I can always swap the cams and carbs or go higher compression.

I can't find a recent pic, I'll look for one though. The sv is great though!

Even though I look at other bikes, I have yet to find anything I like better than my Triumph Speed 4.

Well, I like 'em better, but not if I have to spend any money :p

3 months ago I was up to 13 bikes. Got a bug up my a$$, and sold several. Was actually down to 5 one day. Am back up to 14.

Used to race a 450 Husky. That puppy could kill you if you were not keeping eye on it. Now on old BMW's as the will to go fast is still there but I realize how much it hurts to have a shunt...
