Testing a Coil no spark
 

I forgot how to test a coil.

On my 83 Toyota Land Cruiser I have no spark. I used an ohm meter across the two primary terminals and I have a short. I tested across the secondary terminal to both of the primary terminals and it is open.

Do I have a bad coil? I seem to rember that there should be tens of thousands of ohms across the primary side. And hundreds of thousands across the secondary side.

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive and negative terminals on the coil. The resistance should be around 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.

Grab the goil wire with one hand, with the other resting on a metal part of the engine compartment, and have a friend crank over the engine. That will tell you if the coil is any good.
