OT - Rode to the beach today...

What'd you guys do?

Met up with a bud to ride to Alice's and beyond. Tried to sneak a picture of the two female sheriff's deputies at a table nearby, but one of them kept looking at me when I got the camera ready, so I passed. Sorry, AndrewA...

We took an alternate route down to the beach and Hwy 1, Alpine Rd to Pescadero Rd, which was great. We stopped in Pescadero to decide which way to continue, and started noticing Austin Healys all around. This was an immaculate Bugeye Sprite, a very small car:

My uncle had one of these when I was 11 years old. He bought a mailorder supercharger and said it went like hell for about a year, then blew up...

Then we walked up and started admiring the 100s and 3000s.

This 100M (four cylinder) was really cool. The owner built it to be a replica of the 100S Carroll Shelby raced in the Panamericana "Mexico." Before my time..

The Healy Boys were nice guys. We chatted with them for a few minutes, and the guy with the Panamericana replica was telling us Carroll Shelby raced one of two 100Ss built in that race in 1955. Then he popped open the trunk and showed us his notebook. Carroll didn't do so hot:

A couple of others. We missed a total of twenty by about an hour...

We stopped at the beach as soon as we found a good spot:

Beautiful cars... I have a real fondness for Bugeyes. Got a drive in one once and LOVED it. There are a couple in town, one of which is a really nice well-worn driver. A few years ago there was a company rebuilding Bugeyes with ( I think) a Suzuki twin cam 1300cc engine a 5 spd transmission.

Also got a drive in a 3000, and was really impressed. They are a great roadtrip car (as long as it's nice out) but a lot of $$ nowadays.

I had a Bugeye that I sold about 15 years ago. That car was loads of fun to drive.
