Darwin was right, here is solid proof...

AP) Duluth, Minn.

A northeastern Minnesota man is dead of an accidental gunshot wound to the chest.

Witnesses told St. Louis County investigators that 36-year-old Allen Lee Cooke was showing a .22-caliber revolver to a friend when the gun discharged while he was twirling it on his finger.

The accident happened just before three o'clock this morning in Lakewood Township northeast of Duluth.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say alcohol was not a factor in the death and the shooting was not hunting related.

Natural selection thinning the herd.....

Agreed. How about this one.

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - A hand grenade being used instead of a ball in a game of catch exploded early on Saturday killing three youths in this Bosnian town, police and news agencies said.

Two youths aged 19 and 20, one of them from neighboring Croatia, were killed instantly while a 20-year-old woman died on her way to hospital, police said. Her sister was slightly injured but two other youths suffered serious injuries.

The blast occurred at 2:00 a.m. in the western town of Novi Grad at a place in the town center frequented by youngsters. Police said an inquiry was under way and declined further comment. It was not clear why the grenade exploded.

ONASA news agency quoted witnesses as saying the youths tossed the hand grenade to each other before it exploded in the hands of one of them.

Best statement of the whole article. They better go and cipher on that one for awhile. :>)

Anybody remember that game Timebomb?

cowtown 11-11-2005 02:03 PM

Ahh, that brings back happy memories of my youth, when the neighbor kids would all get together for a game of Bosnian Rugby.

M.D. Holloway 11-11-2005 02:10 PM

we would smack each other in the knees with ball peen hammers and gargle with drano. The first one to start convulsing lost...good times...

Huh? Bosnian Rugby? Where did you play that? :)

From the manual: Grenade, fragmentation, M1A2.

'After the pin is pulled, Mr. Grenade is not your friend'

Come on, everyone remembers the game "run from the sun". Its where you throw a lawn dart up in the air and then try and dodge it. It was fun till Kenny took it in the eye. Yeah.....we miss Kenny.

legion 11-14-2005 06:50 AM

You killed Kenny? You bastard.

We played 'run from the sun' but with compound bow & arrows. We also made a baseball-cannon that would shoot a baseball straight up almost out of sight with M-80s.

Amazing we made it through those teenage years.....

When I was an early teen, the video game "Joust" was really popular. It was the one with riders on big birds knocking each other with sticks.

We used to mount up on our Schwinn StingRay dirtbikes and come at each other with wooden rods to see who could knock the other off his bike. I've still got a scar from where a bike pedal went through my thigh, all the way down to the bone. Six stitches there. Ahh, it was fun being immortal back then.

Hey, we did that too - we played with 2 x 4s from a construction site. I got my friend in the forehead with one (and knocked him off his bike) it took two weeks for the 2x4 square mark to fade from his forehead.

We did the lawn dart thing too - and used to have bb gun fights too - one pump maximum... of course they always got ugly when someone would get hit in a tender spot and accuse someone of more than one pump - next thing you know we were all pumping 3-4 times and taking serious cover.

(Not to hijack with another thread's topic...)

Paintball guns were originally developed for ranchers and the forestry service as a quick way to mark trees and cattle. Apparently someone found out it was more fun to shoot his friends....

Flatbutt1 11-14-2005 10:12 AM

when bottle rockets were cheap we used to fire them off at one another using garbage can lids as shields.

Oh we did that two - I lived on a golf course, every july 4th we had wars across the fairways. We used to make launchers out of PVC pipe and fire a pack at a time.

amazing I am still alive and not maimed

Yep. I heard that there are roughly 150 male births to every, like, 110 female births. Male infants are not as healthy as female, so there is slightly more male mortality in the first few months. But after that, the guys kick it in high gear and the real surprizing thing, having been a boy most of my life, is that so many of us survive into our 30's.

As far as Darwin Awards and firearms, my favorite is the guy who shot himself in the chest with a shotgun by beating his dog with the stock. Justifiable self-homicide.

Tobra 11-14-2005 04:25 PM

Darwin was right, to a certain point. Now we have seatbelt and helmet laws, mdoern medicine and a number of other things that effectively defeat natural selection.

osidak 11-15-2005 04:28 AM

Growing up we had bb gun fights as well - if got popped hard and thought it was a multi pump shot I would drop some rock salt down the barrel and fire away. That usually got a response :)

For close combat we would have roman candles taped to the barrels and would shoot those at each other.

Amazing the bruising that a roman candle can leave - and yes we learned quickly to have our clothes soaking wet before we began to play.
