Import of Non US production car???

Guys,

I'm looking at a couple of old cars from Japan.

I've touched base with the NHTSA regarding importation and the info I'm getting is that basically I can't use them on the street unless I can prove a show purpose (technology, ...) and then only limited to 2500 miles per year (to which you must post a bond...).

This does nto work for me, I'm looking at being able to drive them around a bit not necesarily to/from shows.

Any ideas? I'm not talking 959's nor Skylines; just 1960's vintage microcars.

Car Crazy Juan

Anything '66 or older I think has no safety or emmisions regs, so it is real easy. Things started to get tough about '71. I love those little "K" (550cc or less) trucks from that era. Good luck.

I thought that anything 25 years or older was OK however, the fellow at NHTSA said that its not so easy. The cars are earlier than 1968.

I guess, I can wing it and have the customs broker fill out the papers...

I must get a clear picture at the charges I'm looking at beofre Icommit to these 2 cars.

A 1979 car still might have hoops to jump through.. But a pre-'68 should have no relevent DOT or EPA regs to deal with. Does the NHTSA have any printed matter or anything on line?

Here's some relevant links. You'll notice no mention of what to do with a car 25 years or older (that I could find anyway).
