bicyclists! check out my new project bike.....suggestions?
 

Alright I know there are some bikers on this forum, especially in socal.....and not only am I looking for people to share in my enthusiasm, but I would love to meet some of you and find out the best places to ride here. I have recently aquired an OCLV carbon frameset for next to nothing from a friend and am now putting off a few 911 projects to build my bike up. Here is a pic...:cool:

as a kid, i worked in a pro bike shop building mostly trek, klein, gary fisher, lemond bikes....and have always been a big fan of US bike makers. (kinda funny...doesn't fit my porsche obsession)

anyways, my idea is to get a brand new ultegra build kit for drivetrain and buy everything else used from the internet. I have already started by getting a spinergy rev-x carbon rear wheel. not sure what will be the front yet....

so anyone have spare parts to sell/help me build this beast? any suggestions for places to look to snatch up the bits and pieces like a fork, headset, seat/handlebar setup?

p.s. lets see some pics of your bikes, pelicans! :D

Okay, what's your poison? Flats? Hills?

For hills, head to the beach, ride west (west facing coast that we have), and pick any road: Topanga, Malibu Cyn, Kanan-Dume, Latigo, and you'll get a lot of calve work.

If you want flats - Griffith Park will be a good bet. So will San Vicente Boulevard - the San Vicente Blvd in West L.A/Santa Monica. You can haul some serious hiney on those two courses.

Griffith Park also has a hill or two, but they're pretty wimpy; if you're strong enough, you can do it in the big chainwheel.

So, what gruppo will you put on that bad-assed Trek? :D

I've a LeMond Zurich; a Colnago Master and a Peugeot PY10FC. Except for the Peugeot (carbon), I'm a steel person. SmileWavy

Not sure what level of equipment you want to hang on this frame (very nice, btw), but here's what I have:

(2) Mavic wheels (standard, u-shaped), 28 spoke frt., 32 spoke rear w/White Industries lightweight hubs and ti skewers. They have a few thousand miles on them. $100/pair

Believe that you will learn that there are more of us on this forum who rode or raced bikes than you realize! I did road racing for many years and even spent some time in Europe years ago having fun.

This was of course before most of you guys were born, back in the late '60's and on a Peugeuot PX-10, and dammit they did not like Campy and used all frog equipment, usually Simplex. We replaced the wheels immediately and the rest as we could afford it but this was the frame to have way back then. Even did cyclo-cross (off road) on this bike with clincher tires and heavy duty rims but it just was not designed for this type of work.

One of the worse things that happened to me was to get a drivers license. Slowly the car won out over the bike and finally when I went to college the bike stayed home or was used just to go from home to classes. To this day the riding I did as a kid (175 mile races and training) helped the way I am now, with lower than normal heart rate and good endurance.

Have a mountain bike now and ride it from time to time. Too damm busy and thats a shame...

Hey jfw834! Congrats on your score! Thats the very same frame I swapped for my targa.(frame was built up w/dura ace)

Anyway, ultegra is great on that frame but, you might want to reconsider the spinergy rev-x rear wheel. Although it looks hot, it's not made anymore. Parts, warranty, failure...god forbid would leave you out on your own. I would go with a set of the new mavic heliums.

Don't know what your budget is, but I'd go with Campy Record if you feel your wallet is just too heavy these days. It should fit, I have some Campy gear on my Trek 2500.

Shimano Dura-Ace 7800 is badass gear, too, top notch. I rode some Ultegra gear on a friends bike and it wasn't bad by any stretch, probably better than comparable Campy.

Not slamming on 911pcars but you might want to stay away from the Body Geometry saddle. In my experience it's just too uncomfortable; IMO, leather is a nicer ride.

I second staying away from the Spinergy wheels, I met some customers while working at a shop that had em fail. The Mavic's are an excellent choice.

No personal slamming taken, but posterior profiles are variable. A wedgie for you might be heaven for somebody else. In the case of the Specialized saddle, the cutout can reduce pressure on the nerve that creates a potential "limp home" mode, if you know what I mean. :)

Go with Mavic wheels.
Having bikes with ultregra and Dura Ace. I would highly recommend Dura ace. Shifting is much better. Since the release of 10 speed you can find some sweet deals on the 9 speed. stuff.
If that is a 54 cm frame I have the fork for that bike. 1 inch theaded? I had a sponsor from another fork company so its just been collecting dust.

Since no-one's talked about them yet :D - pedals and bars (seats are mentioned - that makes all three contact points)

- I like shimano's pedals - I've got the Ultegra ones which are a deal at the price. I like them much better than Look, but haven't tried Time.

- There are some great bars out there now - oversize bars (and matching stem) seem a bit stiffer and its personal choice between anatomic and classic bend. The main deciding factor for me would be the bend where the heel of your hand sits when riding the hoods. I've got a Ritchey (WCS allow - light, cheapish) bar which has a really sharp bend there which creates a nice comfortable flat area there which flows really nicely into the shifters. The sharp bend does it for me :D

cool info guys.....actually too late with the wheel....already being shipped tomorrow i think. It is a low milage rear spinergy and i always wanted one and guys at my old shop used to rave about them. so i'll see how it is.....even if it fails, i didn't pay that much for it....not a huge loss. but i am also planning on getting a second set of wheels once the bike is built up.

as far as drivetrain, i think i am going with ultegra 9spd. I found a deal online for $599. an 8 pc. kit!....not bad at all i think! for now this will get me new drivetrain at a good price....i might consider upgrading to a duraace crank.....we'll see

i was thinking of a selle san marco leather seat....anyone have experience with these?

also i'm leaning towards a pair of speedplay pedals....had them on my old trek 990 mtn bike and loved the float...

actually, my gf's dad got it for me from a business partner back in the midwest.....shipped it out as a thanks for me building up his new trek madone 5.2 that he had shipped to his office out here.

just wanted to dig up this thread to show off the finished product. finally got the damn thing together! the spinergy i bought on ebay turned out to be total junk and the hub was trashed and carbon spokes were chipped, so i went with a set of mavic heliums. i love the look and feel of this bike, it weighs in at around 18lbs. I have done about 40 miles on it so far and can't wait to ride again tomorrow!

now, who wants to go riding in LA? :D

Congrats! Looks great! Those wheels will get you up virtually any hill! Nice job with the stem adapter to threadless. That will give you lots of variation opportunities!

I'm always game for a couple laps around Griffith Park. Just got a 12-27 chainwheel for the steep hills. It was either that or a compact crank - but jeez - those cranks are pricey.

Thanks Nikita! I actually ended up gettin the fork and headset from pelican "goat" and then found a quill converter so I could have a modern stem/handlebar setup. I found the converter at I Martin in Bev Hills and LOVE that shop....will be there quite a bit more i'm sure.

i went with ultegra 10spd and also managed to find a usps team issue seat.

dd74, i actually was riding just yesterday out there....i live near cahuenga and franklin. went up cahuenga to barham, down to forest lawn, then through griffith park dr. and out to los feliz blvd, and back to franklin in a big loop.

Oh baby.....

I had one of the first Trek 5200 OCLV bikes that came out. Gawd it was sweet. So light and comfortable. Power to the pedal came out as instant power to terra firma.

The rupture disks in my back made me hand it over to my dad do so he could do biathlons. I still ride, a hybrid.

Makes me well up thinking about it. God I miss that f*cking bike.
