on that show, extreme makeover....
(as i prep for property tax)
........does the owner get hit with the new tax accessment? new insurance premium? you give some financially strapped person a new high end home, the tax bill has got to hurt. (similar situation like if i won the PCA 911. i couldnt/wouldnt pay the insurance.)

I am sure they do.
That show gets me all worked up, I always wonder about the increased costs and time to maintain the new home that is twice the size of the old one. They tell you how the family is struggling and then give them a pool to heat and maintain. Also the family couldn't water the lawn of weeds before the show and now they have to maintain a small estate. That show picks a sadder family each week, the first house they made over is only a few blocks from where I live. The wife was pregnant with triplets and so they needed a bigger house. Now you have to adopt a circus of kids with life threatening issues just to get considered.

It's like winning the lottery, then telling the winner that they can only look at the money and must pay all the taxes.
Normally, it seems that their mortgage is paid off and replaced with other higher bills (i.e., gas, gasoline, electric, water, insurance, taxes, etc.), which most cannot be written off on taxes of course. Good intentions do not always provide good results.

If you suddenly had no mortgage payment you could easily use the money you used to spend on that for taxes and upkeep. It would only be a problem if your house was already paid off and you were still not making it.
(Disclaimer: All this is assuming that they basically pay off the old house and then build a new one. If this is not true, disregard)

I don't get the complaints. If they can't afford the newer bigger home, or heat the pool, then by all means sell it and buy something more reasonable. Either way you slice it the makeover awardees make out ahead.

Actually...if an assessor knew anything of the build quality, the taxes would probably go down.
There is no way you can build a house of any quality in 7 days. The drying time of certain materials alone (a timeline you can't manipulate) would eat up way too much of the 7 days. Just think of all the concrete, drywall compound, primer, paint, grout. Those materials alone would take 1-2 days even with "hot" mud, tilt up concrete, and sprayed primer/paint. I don't care how many workers you shove onto the project, you ain't building anything of even marginal quality in 7 days. The whole show is a ridiculously long Sears ad. The punchlist might as well be the enitre house because I'd bet they have to do a lot of it over again. Film is very kind to construction flaws.

I am definetly not complaining. The show is entertaining and has very good intentions. I think those above were just pointing out the things we normally don't think about...after the show.
PS: I remember one show that had some high tech air system for the little girl that had cancer, where they paid the electric bills for one year. Very nice gesture; I hope the bills will not be too $$$ for the girl's family in year 2+. I also agree with David, anyway you slice it the makeover awardees make out ahead.

I agree that without a mortgage, the upkeep should not be near as expensive. However, I am sure the families are quite needy. The materials used are designed for quick installation such as showers and or tubs, paneling and drywall takes a good day at most to install with finishing taking another day. I and a small crew demolished my parents bathroom and had it almost completely rebuilt with two weeks with three people. With the amount of donations and professionals, a project of this magnitude should not be as difficult.

On the same topic, has anyone seen "Random1"? A group of people doing what appears to be genuine good deeds for total strangers.

Okay, someone steal my idea I just thought of....how about a real life documentary of Pay It Forward? I don't really like reality TV, but that would be a ratings blockbuster.

I don't watch the show. Last week they built a house just a few miles from me, and I was asked if I wanted to volunteer some labor.
No. Volunteer so the studio execs get big paychecks? Sorry, but if I'm going to volunteer, I'm going back to Habitat for Humanity. Great organization. |

i thought the whole idea of pay it forward was the do-gooder was to remain anonymous, which means the person who did the deed wouldnt want to be shown, nor the reciever since they would have to do-good later on....good idea though
