Is auto design dead?
I ask as the most interesting designs out in the last five years are all refreshings of designs done 30+ years ago. Mustang, Beetle, Mini etc. What will we look back on 30 years from now, think the design has become iconic and want to refresh?

But aside from the Elise and some of the Alfas and Fiats, by and large, all designs are fairly boring. Maybe the new Civic four-door isn't too bad.
BMWs are hands-down horrendously ugly. I saw a new Bentley 4-door on the street - again, hugely ugly. And Mercedes-Chrysler - persists in a lack of design. Porsche 911s aside, classic Mustangs are still very sweet, as are "real" Minis, old-style Mercedes and BMWs up to the 320i. Case in point: the other day, I saw a lowered, fat wheel-and-tire equipped 64 Mustang with a nasty fast 351 Cleveland in it. It was dull white with some primer-colored aero assist, but the car was gorgeous in its simplicity. For looks alone, I'd rather drive a 30+ year old car than the so-called "cutting edge" garbage around now. It's all too complicated on the eyes. ![]()

Electric cars ARE NOT the future. Maybe for the city-only commuters. Battery technology isn't anywhere near the cost/performance relationship needed to work on the scale of a 2500-3500 pound car. Hydrogen cell is a possibility. Anything else is just a better band-aid. E |
