Just looked at eBay.... that is frikkin insane!!

Last week I had the opportunity to buy a 10 unit bundle at $450/unit (premium systems - not just core). Well, I didn't really want to pony up the cash, and also just thought "too much hype". But I guess I was very wrong on this gamble. I could be putting them out the door right now at $1k each.

Anyway, fwiw, the PS3 will be out by May and it has more features. The XB360 has better processor architecture (IMO) but the L2 cache is too limiting and will never be able to run more than 2 threaded code. Not that the P3 is any better, but if the systems are comparible then I'm buying the one with more bells and whistles and blinky lights.

If you're die-hard for the 360, the price will probably drop when P3 hits the shelves.

The core isn't worth it...wait for the big unit.

They seem to be going for around $2k locally. I hear up to $5k on Ebay. Ridiculous.

RickM 11-22-2005 11:57 AM

I stand corrected:

So is Microsoft holding back on shipments on purpose to create additional hype?

This should show you how out of touch with the mania that this has caused. And, yes, blame Ebay for the ones who stayed up all night to buy one of the the only 20 or less that each retailer sold. I went to my Sam's club early for business members yesterday and strolled in at 8:59 thinking I had it made......wrong! Tried a few other places and the same thing, people waiting outside since midnight. I refuse to get caught up in any buying hysteria. Ebay is effecting almost every purchase nowadays. 10 years ago, people buying these would have to try to go through the paper with less success. Show me the guy thats going to buy this for $5500? When it will be worth retail in a month.

Oooh that's a bummer... 3 million in 90 days... Can you imagine how many of these are going to break/fail? Even at only a 1% defective rate that's 30,000 units. No thanks, I'll wait until they have all the manufacturing bugs figured out...

Not to side track the thread but... In africa they're screaming for a bowl of rice... look at what we're doing here... it's kind of disgusting... we just have too much money...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I get to pick mine up in 3 hours from a secret location in Redmond :) Missed launch yesterday because i was in Japan :(

MS is not holding them back, we are selling all that we could make. Trust me on that one we would love to sell one to everyone that wants one immediately.

I bet Microsoft is behind the 10K plus purchases on ebay. It would be brilliant use of marketing dollars to create hype and mania WAY beyond the normal channels of advertising. They will generate sales regardless, but this kind of attention for the brand is priceless.

Lots of high fives I'm sure at Microsoft...

EdT82SC 11-23-2005 12:15 PM

My brother in law bought one, and unloaded it in a one day auction for $950. He wants one for himself too, but he's going to wait until they are selling for less then suggested retail.

on-ramp 11-23-2005 12:42 PM

never underestimate human stupidity.

now where did I put that 10mm wrench?

Par911 11-23-2005 12:46 PM

It's all a bunch of hype.............anyone remember cabbage patch kids?

smoak 11-23-2005 01:06 PM

Its is elementary economics. Supply/Demand. 3 million units shipped, if that number is even accurate, is probably not even half of what could be sold if they wanted to. A new gaming console right before christmas, what do you expect. Some of these crazy parents these days would pay whatever they had to for little Johnny's present, then put in the hat the 22 year old's living in the basement of mom and dad's house who spend their entire paycheck on this sucker and VIOLA.
