2 fall through ice and die here
 

Seems like this happens every year here in Wisconsin. Usually it's drunk snowmobilers. This time a ten year old girl and her dad who were out on a walk. I always wonder when the first will happen. I didn't expect it would happen this soon and right here in our little bedroom community though. Apparently the girl went out on ice that formed over a drainage culvert. Normally the water wouldn't be very deep, but still, not a good idea. I guess the ice was thinner and the water was deeper than she thought. Hell-it was 58 degrees only 3 days ago with no ice anywhere-what were they thinking? She went in and Dad went to save her. Very sad.

I'm sure Monday will be bad at school for all the kids in the village when they all find out. It's a pretty tight knit community. I'm sure most of you are too smart for this, but a warning anyway-Keep the hell off the ice and educate your kids as to the dangers of thin ice.

Nothing worse than avoidable tragedy, I am from MN. and still can't believe how often that happens. It would be one thing if they were all visitors from Florida or some place that never sees ice, but it's almost always natives. Really sad, sorry for your community.

They featured this story on the evening news just as I was reading it here. Is this the reason for the choppers you mentioned in yesterdays thread?

Yes. They had two flight for life standing by in case. Unfortunately, they weren't necessary.

My Dad called from Ar to see what was happening-he too saw it on tv. I was surprised that it made national news. We seem to get our share of that. Last time we set a record for deaths in one accident. Big crash due to fog. We were just getting over that one.

I was told a few days a go one of the local lake communities purchased a hovercraft for ice rescue. I don't know which one they purchase. If it's thin enough for one person (or dog) to go though then you will also go though - call for help and let the professionals do their job (harder to do than say).
