My GM vehicles have been ultra reliable
I wasn't a GM fan until I owned two Dodge Grand Caravans back-to-back. Both are company leased vehicles that have been driven at least 40K miles a year. I logged 85K miles in my first Caravan in two years requiring only regular maintenance. My current van already has 65K miles and I've only had it 15 months and have had 0 problems.
I'd buy one of these vehicles over a similarly equipped Toyota or Honda van. Those two vehicles are way overpriced. Not all GM products are undesirable. Btw, the only vehicle I would never ever drive again is the Ford Taurus. I had a 1998 station wagon that was the biggest POS. |

Umm........, uhhh.......,
Dodge Caravans are not GM vehicles.  Those would be Daimler-Chryslers, but glad to hear that they have served you well. Most Domestic cars and trucks are OK for the first 100k miles if maintained on schedule, regardless of make. FWIW, I own a '99 Taurus wagon w/ 130k on the clock that has been ultra-reliable, (knock on wood).

And my buddies Caravan here at work has been a ferocious money pit.
I think the biggest problem with US-made stuff is that the quality is spotty. My in-laws own a Tahoe that has been a great vehicle. My sister owns one (from the same model year) that has had so many problems she doesn't want to talk about it any more. How could you put 125k miles on Chrysler products and mistake them for GM vehicles? Mike

Yeah, Chrysler is Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep, etc...
GM is Chevrolet, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Cadillac, GMC, Hummer, Saturn, etc... Ford is Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, etc... And I've had several GM cars and they've all been reliable. I think more important than the manufacturer is the specific car.

My last Chevy truck went over 200,000 miles before I sold it to a friend. It's still going strong. I keep telling him I should have kept it longer.
Hope my current Chevy truck does as well. It's at 70,000 and counting... |

My Jeep has 93K on it and drives like new. Only 2 things have gone wrong other than scheduled maintenance.
American cars can be very made well. I think it is a quality control issue that they are fixing. American cars from the late 90's forward have been much improved and seem to be on par with other manufacturers.

My good GM car, 73 Vega wagon. The bad, 87 Buick Century wagon: 90k miles and out. My bad Toyota, 90 4Runner: a real money pit. My good Volvo, 92 740 with 190K miles which we gave to neighbor's kid for college and it is in near new condition still. My bad Volvo, 93 850: don't get me started. Currently with 92 911 with 165k miles.

This is a funny thread, but seriously:
When you went to the dealer to purchase the vehicles, (and service them), the huge word "Chrysler" everywhere didn't tip you off that maybe this wasn't a real GM dealer? Or the complete and total lack of Chevrolets/Buicks/Pontiacs/GMC trucks/etc.. anywhere on the premises? Those things would raise a red flag for me, don't know about you. I guess that being raised in the U.S. and bombarded w/ advertising for decades usually does a better job of "brand identifying" on people, you should volunteer for an industry study to see what went wrong. Maybe they would pay you. Astonishing.

Man, I really did think Dodge is GM. What a doofus. These are company leased vehicles and are always delivered to my door. I get oil changes at Jiffy Lube, Firestone, etc not at the dealership.

My father bought a Buick Century new in 1985. In 1992 he gave it to me with 130K miles on it to drive back and forth to college. I drove it to 155K with no major problems. While it was a reliable, it is not something that I would buy.
I'd buy an American car, but they don't make anything that I'd want to drive. However I would buy an American truck. Probably a Chevy/GMC with a diesel engine.
