My wife thinks I'm nuts (car buying getaway)

I'm getting my wife a new SUV and I want to road trip it. Like fly out to Texas and drive the thing back, just to get away and relax. I've done this before with a buddy(and even then only to Ohio) but I really just want to be alone for a couple days and "zone out". Can you feel me?

I can diggit. Been a long time since I did a solo roadtrip. I drove from Dawson city, Yukon back to NB years ago... 7 full days of driving. By the time I got home, I had the whole world figured out AND I could whistle.

Road trips are mostly a guy thing. I purchased our Expedition on Ebay from Texas and wanted to fly out and take a 3 day drive back. Wife thought I had lost my mind. As it turns out I ended up flying alright, to Japan on a last minute business trip...so the Expedition was trucked to our home.

Now that I've got the itch again I will drive back the next out of state vehicle purchase.

I bought my 951 from a fellow Pelican from Boston. I flew out and we met in Buffalo. 11 hours later, I was home in Bloomington. I just wish I'd figured out the seat controls earlier in the trip...(They were different than my 944S.)

I flew out to Denver to pick up my m3 and drove it back to Virginia over a weekend. My friends and coworkers all thought I was crazy. Only car guys understand.

lenn, i think you are crazy for entirely different reasons, and the fact you mention texas as your destination to start this trip speaks volumes. maybe, i mean prolly your guy will be there in crawford on vacation about anytime you feel like getting underway.

I love road trips, especially when the whole family is not in tow and you can relax a little. My 2 y/o gets tired of being in his seat so getting from A to B as fast as possible is more the pace.

When buying my 80SC my 12 year old son and I flew up to Kansas City from Florida and drove it back. I hit the Arch in St. Louis, then stopped off in Nashville for the night. Then is was over the Smokies and on to Savannah for the night. Then on home. Great drive and good time spent with my son.

It was looking like I was going to have to shoot up to the house in North Carolina on the 18th for a furnature delivery. I was excited and immediatly thought "Road trip in the Porsche again". I have a DE on the 18th so I had to book a flight that night instead. I was really bummed I was more excited about the road trip than the DE.

Your not crazy at all. There was an article in Esquire Magazine many years ago, the author was discussing "Checking out" he would take off on the road for a few days once a year to decompress. No cel phone, no pager just out on the road in peace. I thought he was nuts back then (15 years ago) now as I am older I understand.

I'm hoping to buy my next car in Texas... I think it'd make for one hell of a roadtrip.

The only reason I say Texas is that a lot of good deals seem to be had there. I could really care less where I go (as long as it's not Cali)

I bought an '80Sc in Texas and drove it west. I bought a 26' Grumman stepvan in Rhode Island and drove it west. I bought 2 bikes in San fran, and rode them south.

Road trips are good for the soul.

I drove from Connecticut to Phoenix Arizona and back for my kids high school band. Two other guys and U-haul panel truck full color guard equipment. It took 3 days out and 3 days back. Everyone thought we were nuts but it was great fun. Do it.

I think we should give it a name. Let's call it a disorder, like S.A.D. - Seasonal Affectation Disorder. I know I get this around February after not having seen the sun in 8 weeks and looking like the English chick in that other thread.

We could call it R.A.D. Roadtrip Affectational Disorder. You get this when the pressure puts atop the roof of a building with a high powered rifle. Only a road trip will do.
