Computer Explorer problem.....red X comes up and program/browser shuts down.

One of our computers a red "X" keeps coming up for Pelican and some other sites (but not all sites). It states:

"This program ....and will be shut down" message comes up. along with "if the program persists contact the vendor"

The details says:

" EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNAL.32.DDL...etc.,

Is there anyway to either :

1. Easily corrrect this. or

2. Should/can transfer another browser version onto the computer to replace the old one? (Can't download a newer browser version from the internet onto the computer either)

Is this computer at your job site and in-house IT has control of it?

Errr....why can't you download a new version? Can you download updates? Without the ability to contact the Microsoft website and get updates, keeping the applications patched is tough.

Its hard to say why this is happening. You may have a piece of spyware that is causing IE to fail. It could also be something more ominous like a memory issue (I doubt it).

You could download updates to a different computer, then transfer them to you your computer, but its a pain in the ass. You could also order a service pack CD from Microsoft. I think they run like $10.

If you are not the technical sort, it may be worth taking it into the geeks at Best Buy and having them service pack it and clean up. Just back up all your data before you take it in.

The computer at issue is just a home PC.

I can connect to the web/internet and get to many sites OK. But some sites (like Pelican, and one of the game sites I visit), the X always comes up on that computer, and freezes the computer.

The update wants me to connect to the web to download the update, but then states (for iexplorer 6) "cannot download due to missing components" for iexplorer 6. I want the 5.5 version but I can't get any connection for the 5.5 when I try to execute the download.

Can I transfer the entire web browser I am using on this computer to the other computer at issue without having to connect to the internet?

Point your problem computer to The Firefox Home Page and download it. During the installation, I believe it asks if you want to import your Favorites from "another browser". At this point have it import from IE...should resolve your issue.

Unfortunately an evening with no results.

Downloaded the Firefox, but upon execution, it gets past the "verify... archives etc.," and then the screen flickers and then nothing happens.

Then tried to download 5.5 from PC World, and the same old thing "unable to locate components" or something along that line.

I can get to Pelican for instance, but the only way I can keep the dreaded "X" from coming up is to hit "Stop" before the page is fully loaded.

Which OS (Windoz 98, W2000, WXP) are you using? How old is the load on the computer, when was it put into service? Have you done a defrag on the hard drive recently and checked for errors?

Might try reloading the OS again and then going to MS to get update service packs and updating the system. If its still doing this or if the computer has been working with this load of the OS for over a year or so might be worth formatting the hard drive and doing a fresh, new load. You would be surprised how full of crap a computer hard drive becomes and how much faster it works after a fresh load of the OS.

Sounds like you're working on an old cantankerous PC, can be much like working on an old Porsche. What version of Windows do you have?

It could be any one of a huge number of things, but it sounds like you've gotten spyware or a virus or part of the browser or OS has gotten damaged. Unfortunately with an old OS you are more susceptible to those things than with XP. Can you get a screen capture of the error when it pops up?

The more info/details that you can give us, the better. Don't worry, we won't ask for your name or where you live

It's Windows 98. The error says something along the lines:

"Invalid page fault error in Module Kernal32.dll"

I'm reading some of the Cyber Tech Help forums and may try some things. I read that sometimes this is caused by the browser trying to load two pages at the same time.

Many of the sites load fine. Some, Pelican for instance I always get the error.

(the "Beast" is running fine, in the garage at the moment to keep it away from the snow. Had a great spring, summer and fall driving all over. Just tapped up on fresh gear lub, adj the parking brake, checked the rear brake lines, and checked the rear CV boots. Thanks for asking)
