Thinking about buying a v-6 Ford Explorer, any good years, or what to stay away from???? 2 wheel drive

Stay away from Explorers in general? Just kidding, they're not my favorite though. Spend much time in traffic? A friend of mine just moved to SoCal, he ended up selling his V8 Explorer because he said it was dangerous on the interstate. Slow, and didn't handle well. Food for thought at least. Ford just recalled the bulk of their trucks and SUVs because a cruise control module can catch fire, even if the vehicle is off. Several people have had garages burn down because of this, so it's something to check on.

We've a 2002 V8 Mountaineer - same thing as an Explorer. It's AWD, and so far, no problems.

I don't think it's the gearing/engine that's sluggish; it's the computer trying to figure out how it should defy your wishes to go faster.

I've had four Explorers and currently have a 2003 model. I like the V8 hands down over the V6...even the "High Output" version. The sixes stuggle to move the truck, are noisier and gas mileage is the same or worse than the V8.
One thing I do not care for in the V8 is that it's hard to finesse launch. Seems the accelerator is very sensitive, almost like an on/off switch. I experieced this with both the 5.0L and 4.6L motors.

I've had all flavors of the trans (except manual) and like the flexibility and control of the non-AWD(only) version. The AWD vehicle didn't allow me to select 4x4 high or low and I feel those features make a BIG difference in poor weather situations.

The one peeve I have with the vehicle is that the trans sticks in 2nd gear when upshifting. Probably a programming issue.

BTW, I personally wouldn't consider the V8s slow. Compared to a TT Cayenne maybe but not to others in it's class. But then again I didn't get it to drag race.

Ford Exploder? Make sure it does not have the wrong tires and are inflated properly. The catching fire thing is on the full size trucks and Expedition, not on the Exploders as I recall. Don't care for Fords

I have an '02 Mountaineer with the V8 and AWD. Not sure why some think this truck is sluggish. Mine accelerates very well. I have not received any recall notices except for new mounts on the rear glass hatch.

Still drives like a heavy SUV and stops like one also. The midsize stuff like the Cayenne and FX45 have considerably less cargo room so you pay a hauling stuff around penalty for sake of a car-like ride.
The Mountaineer (Explorer) pulls medium weight trailers very well with the V8 - If you pull a car hauler then go for the Suburban.

I have had to replace all 4 wheel hubs due to bad bearings and now the front drive is starting to make noise.
