'Emergency' Cellphones
Does anyone know of a cellphone service suitable for emergency use?
I'm looking for a phone for a Christmas gift for a relative. Am thinking some kind of prepaid setup would be appropriate. I have looked at Virgin Mobile but they require you to purchase more minutes at least every 90 days or the service will be cancelled. There is a good chance the phone won't be used at all over 3 months- does anyone know a service provider that has no requirements for top ups? Coverage would need to be good for NYC & Long Island. Thanks! |

From what I understand a deactivated phone must be able to dial 911. So, an older, unused phone is ideal for true emergencies.

My wife's old, deactivated phone can still dial 911. Found that out by my 9 yr old who showed me...911 people weren't happy. :0

I believe keeping the 911 functionality is law. My guess is that when they collect used phones for less fortunate battered women it's for this capability.
