Yet another "Band" thread

Seeing as how "best guitarist, drummer, song, rock/roll band" threads have been covered and discovering that we all in our love for music have either played it, listened to it, followed it, procreated to it, and did alot of stuff We would like to forget about to it, I had another thread come to mind. What Bands (known or unknown) have always stood out for having a name that you have always been Hip with. 3 categories ( but don't feel like you have to answer for all of them)Cool, Poetic and Weird. And also, if you can give the insight to the origin (ie.Led Zepplin, Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.) the better. I'll start it off with:

Cool : Burning Sensations, Sniff and the Tears, Buzzcocks, 10cc,Beatfarmers, fIREHOSE, Del Fuegos, BoDeans.

Poetic: Electric Prunes, Procol Harum, Moody Blues, Pearl Jam, Son Volt, Pink Floyd, Concrete Blonde

Weird: Toad the Wet Sprocket, Anyting But the Girl, They Might Be Giants, Exploding Broomhandles, B***h*le Surfers, Plimsouls

HardDrive 12-20-2005 09:25 PM

Cool : Sonic Youth, Lush, Stereolab

Poetic: Cowboy Junkies, Mazy Star

Weird: Primus

(These catagories are pretty subjective)

Weird: Squirrel Nut Zippers
.
A friend of mine had his own very tight local group - Blues, Rock, Cajun, C&W, Tex-Mex hybrid - and changed names a few times. The one I liked was Holy Smoke. Amazing how many super-tight/talented groups never make the big scene. He told me once that talented musicians abound, but that the key ingredient in any group's success is ego management.
.
Led Zeppelin - "When Jimmy Page was assembling the group, Keith Moon (drummer from The Who) got word of his plans and predicted the group would go down "like a lead balloon". Bassist and keyboardist John Entwistle thought it would be "more like a lead zeppelin." Page took the phrase and manager Peter Grant changed the spelling to "led" in order to avoid mispronunciation."

Trying to fill in some (very little actually) of the "insight" part.

Pink Floyd was named after a somewhat prominant London blues artist. They started out playing the blues.

Led Zeppelin was sort of named by Eric Clapton, I believe. When the band members told him what they were up to, he said it "would fly like a lead balloon".

Pearl Jam is supposedly a jam that Eddie Vetter's grandmother or aunt Pearl made for his grandfather or uncle. She was supposedly innadvertantly making or storing it in a way that produced some kind of hallucinagetic effect.

That's what little I know; probably all urban legend anyway. I don't even want to know about the Butthole Surfers...

No No No...the REAL story about the naming of the Zep is that...Jimi Page was at a bar talking with EC about reforming the Yardbirds...his idea was to call them the New Yardbirds....EC commented that will go over like a Lead Zepplin.

The Kings of wierd.....

The Mothers of Invention and Zappa

and Captain Beefheart...

Cool: Steely Dan

Poetic: Dire Straits

But I'll be Fitty next year, so my notions of cool and poetic are perhaps blemished.

Your both correct. Jeff Ament, the bass player was/is the B-ball fanatic. Mookie was his favorite player. They changed their name to avoid a lawsuit.

Now, what two bands (three actually) broke up and formed Mookie Blaylock?
