Good Dog.

Took my 3 kids and my Father in Law out for lunch today--came back to a backyard full of Godiva chocolate box shreds. My dog Farmer ate 2 lbs of chocolate that were in my Father in law's suitcase. NIIIIce. Merry Christmas!

'Sure hope Farmer is OK.
My girlfriend recently told me about chocolate being toxic for dogs.
Who knew?
.
http://petcaretips.net/chocolate-poisoning-dog.html
.
Why is Chocolate Lethal?

Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle.
While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

Symptoms of Chocolate Dog Ingestion and Poisoning

You can recognize that your dog has eaten a toxic dose of
chocolate from the symptoms. Within the first few hours, the evidence includes vomiting, diarrhea or hyperactivity. As time passes and there's increased absorption of the toxic substance, you'll see an increase in the dog's heart rate, which can cause arrhythmia, restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting.

This can lead to hyperthermia, muscle tremors, seizures, coma and even death.

A typical 20 kg dog will normally experience intestinal distress after eating less than 240 g of milk chocolate, but won't necessarily experience bradycardia or tachyarrythmia unless it eats at least a half a kilogram of milk chocolate. If it does not expel the chocolate from its system because of the fat and sugar content, then it would have a 50% chance of surviving after eating 5 kilograms. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, approximately 1.3 g of baker's chocolate per kilogram of a dog's body weight (0.02 oz/lb) is sufficient to cause symptoms of toxicity. For example, a typical 25 gram baker's chocolate bar would be enough to bring out symptoms in a 20 kg dog.

EDIT , that's copy paste stuff..i'm no vet , i can't even pronounce those fancy words without practicing in front of a mirror for about 2 hours

I had a girlfriend that ate that much chocolate once. She was a dog too.

Hope Farmer is doing well.

Farmer's fine. Thanks for the concern. She weighs 85 pounds and is ok. I was aware of the chocolate problem with dogs--didn't mean for my initial post to come across as unconcerned. We kept a close eye on her yesterday and she's normal. Thanks guys.

A guy at my local watering hole has a Jack Russel that sits in a chair right next to him at the bar. She gets a glass of Tequila Rose and she sips it! Takes her maybe half an hour to finish it, it's hillarious. When they leave she jusmps up on the carpet pad on his Harleys gas tank and away they go. Very cool dog.

there used to be a guy that came out every saturday with his horse
stopped at the pub, jumped off the bronco, and by then the bartenders knew the drill, a pint for the dude, and a pint for the bronco
bit of a messy drinker, but the horse sure liked the brew...
