Talking Amex to the rescue after Ipod dies

My wife's Ipod started showing a picture of an unhappy Ipod on the screen instead of the menu that it should at power up. Turns out this signals a fatal error and the unit must be replaced. We dug out the receipt and found it was 5 months out of the warranty period. Dang!

Oh wait! We paid with American express and they double the factory warranty. After jumping through a few hoops sending in receipts we got a letter today that $322.32 was credited to our account! How cool is that?!?

That's pretty freakin' cool. Finally an actual perk from a credit card.

I wonder if "Blue" does that? I doubt it.

I had the same thing happen with a POS Philips TV. Visa reimbursed me 100% plus the TV diagnostic repair bill. Whew!

It is an Amex Blue card.

We had to send in a lot of documentation: Receipt, copy of warranty, copy of repair order, copy of statement (which we didn't have, but Amex sent us for $5).

When we started the process they said they "may" ask us to send in the broken Ipod... which they did after we sent in the paperwork. It went to a salvage company who will probably sell the remains.

It'll probably become one of those refurb units they sell at Costco.

I bought my wife an IPOD last year for Christmas. We've had to ship it back to Apple twice for a replacement. Now it is out of warranty (missed the deadline to buy the extended warranty by a week) so now we are flying without a net. We like the IPOD and ITUNES. I just wish the IPOD was more reliable and that I used AMEX to buy the damn thing.

Some Mastercards also do the warranty extension thing.

A few years ago I bought a toilet from HD. Drove home and opened the rear hatch on my Explorer. Out falls the toilet crashing to the ground breaking into many small pieces. I called Mastercard and they issued me a credit for the full purchase price including tax. I believe I had to send them a picture of the damage.

My 2G iPod has been truckin' along for 2 (3?) years with no problems. Hell I've even dropped it onto the driveway a few times. No damage other than a few scrapes on the plastic.

AMEX is one of the best cards from a buyers perspective. Merchants hate them because they charge more but I like to use mine whenever there is any possible cause for concern, (internet purchase, etc.)
