Risky Business

I know most of you have probably seen this Tom Cruise movie, and yes, the 928 is BY FAR the best thing about it.

It seems like Cruise's character is pretty knowledgeable about Porsches (he has posters and stuff in his room), yet he is unsure of whether or not his dad's 928 can 'take' a huge freaking Cadillac. I understand that the kid is an inexperienced driver, and the 928 appears to be automatic, and he has 3 people in his car as opposed to the single pimp in his Caddy, but COME ON... a 914/4 could take that caddillac, let alone a VERY FAST Porsche 928.

Any thoughts?

wow, what a waste of time for a post. Since I have nothing better to do, let me say this. The 928 actually appears more to be a manual tranny for many reasons. First of all, when he backs out of his garage, he kills the engine. And when his girlfriend, that hooker, gets her jacket, she accidently knocks the car out of park and into neutral, at which point it rolls into lake Michigan. It is clearly a manual tranny.

Um if its manual how could she knock it out of PARK?? If she somehow unhooked the hand break while pullin gher coat out then i can see it. But it smore likely that she knocked it out of park into reverse because they are right next to each other

right?

she knocked it out of first gear into neutral. Since you don't need to have the parking brake on while in gear, it wasnt on. when she knocked it into neutral, with no parking brake, it began to roll.

can you just take it out of 1st without hitting the clutch?

craig did you have a hard time learning how to drive stick when you foudn this out?

It doesn't take much effort at all to move it from being in gear to out of gear, or out of gear to in gear (all without pressing the clutch). Don't try it when the car is on though . If memory serves me right, the car was in either second or fourth gear. She couldn't have knocked it out of gear real easy if it were in first or third because her butt is what knocked it out.

It was actually her purse strap that got hooked on the shifter. She was pissed at him and was going to leave, so she grabbed her purse to go.

james is closest yet. lana wasn't arguing with joel (yet); she goes in to retreive her purse, and in pulling it out, nudges the shifter from 1st to neutral with the back of her hand.

oh, and if a car is in 1st gear with no parking brake on, it would probably require more force than a slight nudge to move it out of gear. hollywood.

that wasn't first. It was reverse

That movie was so terrible..almost as unrealistic as the fast and furious movie....he barely even pushed that 928..and yes the 928 was the best if only good thing about that movie..-movie critic chris

thanks euro for telling me about the 928 5-spd pattern. never driven the manual, only auto. i wonder why they did that?

as for the movie, i thoroughly enjoyed it, and have ever since it i first saw it in '83. many memorable, well-done scenes. 80's teen angst at it's best.

The 901 trannies have the same "dogleg" pattern (found in early 911s and all 914s). Having 2-3-4-5 in an "H" is more conducive to spirited/performance driving since 1st is basicly just a starting gear.

Okay yeah fine, but what about the chase scene? Any thoughts on that?

And I must say, that 928 sounds GNARLY when he is driving it. I wish my 44 sounded like that...

that chase scene is so-so. if you want to see a great chase scene, go rent the movie bullitt. v8's in san francisco streets. life is good.

Of course I've seen BULLIT! You're talking to a Steve McQueen fan here! (and for good 'chase scenes' I will watch LeMANS any day!)

I don't know. The chase scene in RISKY BUSINESS bugs me... shouldn't that 928 have been able to dust that Caddy with no problem? Does the kid have no idea how to drive?

I personally like the 928 in the 1987 sci-fi The Hidden. Actually, I like the Ferraris in it too!
