Some of what you're talking about is the result of nothing more than demographics. In our chapter PCA, while we don't experience the virulence you've alluded to, people do tend to sit near those of similar interests. Therefore, most of the 911 guys are at one end of the table, the Boxster guys usually in the middle, and us "waterpumpers" at the other end. I've also observed that the "waterpumpers" end of the table is more interested in the cars, driving, and mechanicals while the others tend to be discussing the best wax to use. Not that this is intended to denigrate those more financially able, but many times folks with big incomes pay us to do their maintenance because they don't know how. There are also those who will sit anywhere at the table. Case in point, a 911 guy and I had a great conversation about the merits of the 928 series, the guy next to us (a new Boxster owner) had no clue about the capabilities of either the 928 nor the 951. In fact, the 951 designation was totally unfamiliar to him. The part I liked best was the answer from the 911 guy- "If you think a 911 is fast, just try to keep up with a tricked out 951!" Nothing acrimonious in that conversation, it just serves to illustrate that often an owner of a particular type may know nothing at all of another, and to seem more knowledgable, may resort to degrading remarks, or hopefully like our guy be really interested to find out more.

Not to throw oil in the fire, but:
Last weekend, at a PCA DE, my work assignment was with a C2 owner. His car was experiencing engine problems, and he wasn't able to finish the day. He had attended 3 DE events without ever being able to finish one of them, due to engine troubles! So he said he's considering trading up to a 993. I mentioned to him the option of getting a 951/944S2 Boxster or 996, and he just brushed it off saying that he didn't want a waterpumper, because there are more things that can go wrong with it. By the way, my car lasted the day, and the 2+ hour ride home without any problems. And of course, it is still running fine. Now there's the pot calling the kettle black... -Zoltan. ------------------ PCA NNJR My Toy: http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...ds/Zslalom.JPG [This message has been edited by Z-man (edited 09-21-2001).] |

actaully, i did run into a guy that had an RS America. he didn't know much about the 924, but after doing a bit of invetigation, and hearing what people had to say about it... he admitted that he thought it was a graet little car, but simply nobody had told him about the robustness of the engine, and it's tune-ability. obin |

I couldn't agree more with the original posts. Some of these attitudes are detrimental to humble, well-meaning Porsche owners like myself. Especially here in the south (North Carolina) where if you own a Porsche, everyone assumes you're an elitist, ***hole snob who thinks he/she is better than everyone because you happen to drive a Porsche. It also means you have too much or make entirely too much money!(laugh along with me 914 owners) While I'm on the 914, these 911/carrera bullies get on my nerves. The local PCA chapter treats 914 owners like lepers. I mean, I thought clubs were for enthusiasts & owners, & I sure as hell think having a 914 is a whole lot more interesting than the banker who comes to meetings/functions in his brand new Boxster.
Regardless of who makes the motor, the 914 IS still a Porsche.. I guess the point I'm trying to make is the only friend a 914 owner has is other 914 owners. We are snubbed by other Porsche owners & grouped in with the jerks that inspired this thread by the general driving public. It's very frustrating. As far as the Bulletin Boards go, PP should be commended for a job well done... many thanks! I will say though if you have a problem thats somewhat minor & doesnt interest all these "experts" (like engine-conversions,cam grinding, etc) they will ignore you. That's not real cool. Just because I'm not trying to put a 5.7 Chevy in my car or have posted on here a gazillion times doesnt mean I don't need help. thanks for reading.... |
Willard, I think you're right on the mark with that post...My requests for information are beneath the subject matter experts (SMEs) and other head of the class types. However, there are reasonable folks who take the time to answer my questions. They make all the difference to me.
Take care, Bob Sauerteig |
