Automobili Lamborghini proudly introduces the stunning Lamborghini Miura Concept
Quote:
Lamborghini has issued the following press release:

The House of the Raging Bull brings back a legendary name from the company’s past with the breathtaking “Lamborghini Miura Concept”. The “Lamborghini Miura Concept” will be the first Lamborghini vehicle to be conjured from the talented pen of Walter de’ Silva, Head of Lamborghini Design. de’ Silva’s other design responsibilities include serving as Head of Design of Audi Group. The talented designer’s idea for the new concept was simple: a retro-inspired look heralding back to one of the auto world’s most famous icons, the legendary Miura.

Automobili Lamborghini anxiously begins the New Year with the highly anticipated unveiling of the “Lamborghini Miura Concept,” a modern interpretation of the Lamborghini Miura. Currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary, the Miura was originally designed by Marcello Gandini and was first publicly presented at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show by Ferruccio Lamborghini and Nuccio Bertone. To this day, the Miura remains one of the most beautiful cars ever created.

The new concept model, which as of now, is strictly a concept with no firm date set for its production launch, is the inspired creation of de’Silva, the world-famous Italian designer. He has redesigned every aspect of the car while remaining absolutely faithful to the original form. The new car retains the extraordinary purity of line characteristic of the original Miura: the designer’s intervention has been defined by refining the contours and eliminating any superfluous detail in order to enhance the clean, simple lines and perfectly-balanced proportions of the original that so impassioned enthusiasts.

The restyling of the lower part of the body takes the car’s structural strength and aerodynamic performance to new heights, without disturbing the delicate aesthetic equilibrium.

Even the touches of contemporary styling applied to the interior, the lights, and the wheels have been carefully measured to achieve a homogenous design that is both timeless and immediately recognisable.

And so a true design icon is reborn.

“Over the last two years,” explains Walter de’ Silva, “I have often dreamt of redesigning the Miura. Now, thanks to my new position at the head of Lamborghini design and the enthusiastic support of the Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, I have been able to turn that dream into a reality.” The “Lamborghini Miura Concept” will be on show at the Lamborghini stand at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

I like this concept better than the original if you can believe that.

I like it alot, but wonder when the 'retro' fad is going to stop. Are there no great original designs left?

The original had a elongated look to it that did not appeal to me - heavy. I like the tight and light looks of the new one.

Old one:

I wonder if the new one has a transverse engine like the original?

You can see a little of the 914 in the original. Very beautiful.

The new one looks like a Hot Wheels concept car..

Hey... you gotta know your target audience when introducing a new car!

My opinion is exactly opposite. I liked the long, sleek look of the original better than that little poseur.

914?? Where?
I was watching a show on Speed the other day, and the Lambo chief engineer said that the Miura design was derivative of the GT40.

I agree with both comments.

Is it some kind of grille inlet that is 914ish? I don't see it, need help on this one.

Funny, my mind still asks that when I see the original too, despite knowing it's mid-engined. It's that dang long hood on the original.

Mid-engined.

However this wording in this other article is funny and coy about it.

It's not yet known what engine will be fitted under the bonnet, but it is sure to pack a huge punch............Lambo is likely to feed power to all four wheels.
Looking at the lines of the bonnet (in the rear) and that the original was mid-engined, I'd expect to see mid-engined production. However that "if " is mighty strange wording indeed.

Are you kidding? Hey, crack kills, leave it alone.

The original was beautiful. The new one is ok, but not as good.

LOVE the original Miura. One of the 3 cars that I want to own at some point in my life. Also thought that Ford pulled the GT off well. This one looks too familiar. Also, like the Ford, you know the car is going to get alot bigger and fatter. Definately looking forward to seeing more of it but I was hoping it wouldnt be so retro.

I guess that's why they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, that thing is still as Gawd Auwful Fugly as the last one.

Enough already with the retro designs!

"Personally, I'm shocked at the 'creative stalemate' I see in worldwide automobile design today. Some manufacturers were introducing totally new cars that are functionally better but look almost identical to the cars they replace. I also see a depressing trend where cars around the world are looking more and more alike. They've lost their distinction, individuality and personality." -Charles Jordan 1985

This is about the time when the 'retro' stuff started. (the Viper hit the show circuit in '89) Looking back at past glories seems to be where the world's designers have their heads at the moment. In marketing terms, auto design is a mature market. Until someone finds a way to get people to buy something that isn't a variation of a box with wheels at the corners, we'll be looking at attempts to get us to buy based (partly) upon our emotions about the 'good old days'.
Not too hard to do. I hear some guys have spent tens of thousands of dollars buying and maintaining a car whose body style and engine (air-cooled!!!) hadn't changed in 30 years. Go figure.

I personly like the old shape better visualy. My only problem with the Muira is how they handle the wheels/tires and the area around it, look at it from the front, and they are inset a lot from the top of the car. Just looks weird.
