Be nice, it is illegal to "annoy" anyone on the internet now.

It's illegal to annoy

A new federal law states that when you annoy someone on the Internet, you must disclose your identity. Here's the relevant language.

"Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

Goodbye internet abusers

Shouldn't it be "Whomever?" Oops! I was just being annoying.

BlueSkyJaunte 01-09-2006 02:10 PM

Not "whomsoever"? ;)

So all I have to do is disclose my identity, and then I have carte blanche? Sounds like a deal.

My name is Colin, and I'm from California.

Sure... but you're required to download your bootleg music at 2400bd. Pure torture.

Keep in mind that it's only illegal if you have the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass. I guess if you just have an annoying nature, you're okay.

In as much as the Pelican Parts Technical BBS is a publicly available forum, Public Notice is hereby given persuant to 18CFR Sec 113 that my name is Harvey Cash, and I intend to annoy, abuse, threaten, and harass each and every one of you - in that order.

Should we start a "Pelican most likely to go to prison" poll?
