Local So Cal Ski Areas? What's good for learning to snowboard?
G
|
My kid will be raised to ski. Snowboarding is for punks.
|
i have a cabin in Wrightwood.
Mt. high is ok, you really only want to go after a storm, but it can be decent. I'd much rather go to big bear. Snow is typically pretty hard packed at mt. high, as they make the majority of the snow. But if it rains hard... Friday night, hit the cabin, hit the captain, and ski all weekend |
that man is my hero.

Just visited friends in Redondo Beach. We went up to Big Bear. There are two mountains at the resort, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. Bear Mountain is more geared towards snowboarding while Snow Summit (where i went) is more geared towards skiing. Unfortunately, they have very little snow there right now so check to make sure that they have some right now. When I was there they only had about 1/3 of the runs open, but it was in pretty good condition considering. Hope you have fun

I would drive my '77 924 for life before being caught on a SNOWBOARD!:p :D
|
I have ski'd forever and have recently started boarding. I grew up surfing, so it was totally natural, even with my oversize stature. Boarding is super fun and I think I prefer it to skiing. I am not a punk or a poser and I think some of those little ****s on snowboards outta be shot. It's all about respect and skill.
I'd recommend you spend a week(end) at Mammoth and enjoy the snow, not the crap in the hills above LA. |
Was at Snow Summit last week Wed & Thur - snow boards dominate the mountain - like 75% at least. The snow was decent and they had runs top to bottom of mountain. I'm planning on taking snow board lessons alongside my 8 year old son in a couple months when we head up to Mammoth.
BlueSky - sking is for the older (my) generation. Get your kids on a snowboard. |

That the difference, I guess. These days I go to the slopes with family, not friends.
Many years in the past I went with friends, and we all felt the same way about snowboarders. Most of us still do. ;) |
Mostly, they just sit down on the slope in bunches, like a bunch of speedbumps.
Their lines seem to be at different angles to the lines taken by skiers. Never had a collision with another skier...but been nailed by a couple of boarders. Maybe it's just an attitude thing...like they skip the part about general courtesy when they put the board on. Thankfully it's been a few (glorious) years since I've even seen a snowboarder...we go to Alta for downhill. |

Quit sliding sideways through the moguls. Quit sitting in the friggin' middle of the run, especially when your in a group. Your blocking the entire run you moron! Pull your friggin' pants up! Look what's on your backside before you turn there! |

They typically are punk kids with little respect for anyone else on the slopes. They think nothing of sliding over and scratching your skiis while waiting in a lift line. They often are dressed like slobs. Many are basically just a stain on the once somewhat noble sport of skiing.
This is not to say that all boarders are of this ilk, especially nowadays, but this is the reason I and many other skiers who grew up skiing in the 60's thru the 80's do not like them. FWIW, I do not care much for any of the "sports" that involve doing tricks for points. I love motocross racing but hate freestyle contests, I like car racing but dislike drifting contests, I like bicycle racing but dislike body tattood/freestyle competitions. I guess at 39 this makes me "old fashioned". Oh well, I guess everyone has an opinion, now you know mine. :D |
most of my friends and I ski, however a few snowboard and they understand courtesy while boarding. I will agree however that the majority of boarders are *******s
|
I started snowboarding back in '88, was a minority then and many slopes didn't want us. Skiers were rude and condescending to me all the time. It's sad to see there are still those that carry the same banner.
There are just as many novice and intermidiate skiers that clog the trails, stop in the middle of nowhere and blast haphazardly down the trail. It is the lack of courtesy and common sense that are the problem, two traits that are inherently lost on the majority of today's youth. This is apparent nearly everywhere in society, not just with punk snowboarders. I wonder how many resorts would be closed today had it not been for the growth of snowboarding to bring money and people back to the mountains. |
Stereotyping thousands of snowboarders into the catagory of "punks with no etiquette or skill" ??
Pretty snobby if you ask me. |
And to think! I stopped in the middle of this run to enjoy the view...

I never said all snowboarders were this way, just a large majority.
I've had two run in's with them. In the first one I was blindsided by a guy who wasn't watching his back side. We both went down hard. I got up to see if he was OK...he scurried off without say anything more than "fuch you d*ckhead". The second one I was skiing down a cat track when one jumped off of the ledge above me, landed on my ski tips and tore both binding toe peices from my brand spankin' new Rossi 4G's. Again, never apologized and continued on his oblivious way. This doesn't even count all the times I've watched them get in way over their head and side-slip all the way down a triple diamond run with fresh snow on it...effectively creating an ice sheet the width of their board. Don't even get me started on how badly they fuch up moguls. One of my best friends is a snow boarder and he agrees with most of what I've ranted on here...but then again he's courteous and has skills. |
Funny... I just had a thought...
Telemarkers. Use different lines. Chop up moguls. 'Cept for the all-stars a lot of them stop/fall in the middle of the run. You think they're punks too? Unshaven bib wearing backcountry types! How dare they stain the sacred veil of skiing! |
Sorry for the above thread hijack SoCal...
To answer your question... The convience of the local mountains cannot be beat. During the period that you are learning you will not need the bells and whistles that other 'real' mountains offer. The local mountains have everything you need to get started. You can expect long lines and warm temperatures... But on those first few days of learning you'll appeciate having the long break at the end of a run and not being cold. That mountain high deal sounds biitchin'! Take advantage of it. Have fun! |
Teles are cool. They actually try and avoid hitting you.

There is no sacred veil...just look at what the kids are doing on skiis these days. I'm friggin' amazed! This coming from a guy who in all of his 20+ years of skiing has never even pulled off a single sucessful helicopter. ;) Snow boards have their place...deep snow (minus the side slipping), half pipes, board parks, etc. Beautiful picture BTW, where is that? |

Backside of Copper Mtn, Colorado. Two thumbs up. |

You should hear me on the subject of American cars vs foreign! I learned to drive at a time when Hondas and VW's ran 10 times longer than a K-car or a Ford Escort. Some opinions formed in my "impressionable youth" are burned in permanent!:) PS: at 39 I can still hammer the bumps (not all day though), ski (not slide) icy steep double blacks and even pull off a helicopter on occasion when I think my kids need a dose of "dad is not too old still have fun":) |
