Barrett Jackson '91 Targa Worth 37K?
Just watched a 1991 red 911 Targa roll off the auction blocks at the Barrett Jackson show out West. Car had less than 37k miles and sold for $37,000 plus the auction commission.
I thought these cars were worth 22-max 30k? Comments. wj |

Did you note the bidder appeared to be enjoying the limelight with a mixed drink? The car sold for way to much money!

I have an 88 that is a Targa, is guards red, G-50 trans, has 140k miles and with a 3.2 in back is scary fast. I'll let go for just 3/4's of $37,000 with no commission and the drinks are on me! Such a deal!
Lots of guys with lots of cash buying lots of cars they'll never drive! |

You have to remeber that a car's value is measured only by what someone will pay for it. A salesmanager once told me that "There's an ass for every seat". This example proves case in point. I like seeing the prices of cars go high because the rest of our cars can ride the coat tails of these cars that sell for way too much money and bring up the value for our own cars.

I don't get why you guys are suprised by the prices fetched at Barrett Jackson? Here in Az from a week before and after Barrett Jackson, I see all kinds of ass prices for cars in the paper. Not suprised 95% don't sell. I guess theres a 5% market for those ass's.

I wonder how many of these auctions actually go through, if it is like ebay, deals fall through all the time, mostly over financing, and that is it. The guy who "won" the porsche acted like a damn fool, like he had just won the big lottery, give me a break...now the auction assistants, thats a diff matter.

my .02 1/2 on BJ.
two years ago it was a good indication of the market, with SPEED channel just RAMMING BJ down everyone's throat (so to speak), it's become the newest farce of a reality show. what's next? people crying when they lose? Interviews with the bidder who didn't win? "So sir, how do you feel about losing that maserati?" I won't even bother watch anything this year when I flipped by it last night and in the first two hours a "HEMI Belvedere Recreation" went for over 100 grand. what's up with that? I can get a Belvedere and a crate motor and build one in my garage. sjd

It has become the new reality show. Have you seen the "Behind the Scenes at BJ" episodes on Speed?

Goes to prove the point...more money then brains. I too think it was far too much money for that ride, silly people in Arizona screw it up for others (sometimes). Then again, most of these folks may not know the real value of the ride, just get caught up in the hype of it all.

Sounds like he bought 25k worth of car, and paid another 12k for his 5 minutes of fame, hamming it up for the audience & cameras.

You might have a point there!
I love to watch that show sometimes just to see the rare and wonderful rides that folks have. Of course, I could never afford to pay what many do fork out for those pieces of motoring history but it is nice to see. Crazy the way some folks get when they have too much money to burn and then dont drive them...damn shame if you ask me :-)

I don’t see how this price will effect the price of anyone else’s Porsche. BJ is not the market place for our kinds of cars, particularly a run of the mill 964.
Last year they sold an Alfa spider at some insane price. It had no effect on the thousands of people trying to sell their Alfa’s

Well..it is what it is, over priced cars (my opinion). Dont get me wrong, I love seeing the cars too but, I would never pay the crazy (inflated costs) that many do but thats just me.

Don't forget - there were two people bidding on the car. So, there are at least two people with more money than brains.
Heck, for $37k I'd even sell my 91 turbo, and it has fewer miles than that 964 plus it's a coupe.

Hopefully this will just jack up perceived value of 911s. That way I can unload my SC when the going gets tough.
