Computer qeustion, wont recognize drive?

Frien of mine is having some trouble with her computer, she is upgraing from ME to XP and the computer will not recognize the CD drive. We tried another drive, same thing. we tried another port, same thing.

Anyone got any ieas?

When you go to "my computer" do you see your "C" drive, Floppy drive etc.? I am assuming that you do not see the CD drive at this point.

Try turning off the computer, plug in the CD drive and then turn on the computer. You should get a ping saying that "new" hardware recognized.

Go to "my computer" and you should see the CD drive (probably "D" drive)

Reply if this does not work....

Upgrading from ME is a mistake. Possible to format and do a clean install of XP?

Agree with Dave, operating system should go on a blank formatted hard drive for best results.

Check and recheck the ribbon cable on the cd drive and motherboard. Easy to miss by a pin or miss a row or twisted cable or not seated properly. Ensure power is on by observing light or opening drawer (aka cup holder). :)

As above. I would never do an upgrade from ME. Better off getting the data off (get an external hard drive enclosure) and wiping it out then starting fresh. The external hard drive will come it hand for backing stuff up.

I gotta admit, its pretty weird that its not seeing the CD. I assure this is the same CD that XP disk was sitting in when you upgraded?

Funny thing.... I worked on a Dell with XP Media Center factory installed. Was working fine for 3/4 of a year. It lost both optical drives. I had to do an in-place recovery. That fixed the optical problems, but it had other issues too and is getting a fresh install tomorrow.

Agree with the other guys that a clean install is better. ME was a POS and best to get all of it out of the hard drive and start fresh.

Have you tried the "add hardware" button in Control Panel? Force it to find the device?

*** BACK UP REGISTRY FIRST!!***
The CD globlal key needs deleting and re-entering.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

DELETE Upper and Lower filter

Go into Device Manager and delete there if still shown

Re-boot Computer
