Where to stay on San Diego?
I have to confer with lady friend if she wants to see seaworld or the zoo.
May be going to S.D. for two to four days, I have been to the zoo before and love it. Have not been to seaworld, I would like to see it but it is not a deal breaker. Any good hotel suggestions in the $100 +/- range? If close to seaworld/zoo is too expensive how about something close to good food and entertainment (I drive enough at home and like to walk). TIA, Scott |
The Zoo is not close to Sea World. Zoo is in Balboa Park and Sea World is over by Pacific Beach/Mission Bay.
The drive between them is not too far, but my suggestion would be to Stay at the Westin so that you have access to all of the Night life in the Gas Lamp area. In 2001, I was able to stay at the Westin for about $69/night using Priceline. The Westin Horton Plaza is closer to the Action than the Marriot Convention center. If you are willing to take a Taxi, There are comfort Inns and Marriot Residence and Holiday Inns in the slightly North of Downtown area (South of the Airport). If Money is a problem, find some of the Hotels around Hotel Circle (I-8, just East of I-5) in Mission Valley. You will have to drive from there. |
I just stayed at a Marriott Courtyard downtown that is in a converted bank building- very impressive. Lots of marble, wood detail etc.
Price was reasonable, and its an easy walk to the waterfront. |
Damn!! $100 limit. I was all excited about suggesting the W downtown. If you can splurge go for it. At the very least if its on a weekend night go there for the heated sand floor bar on the roof. Its very cool.
The drive from the Zoo to Seaworld is about 30 minutes tops. |

Hotel Del Coronado?
|
Yep...It's an historic landmark and well deserved. It's great!
|
no, i was suggesting, ive stayed there before
|
I'd say Hotel circle in Mission valley is the most convenient for the least money.
|
Sea World to Balboa/Zoo shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, unless it's rush hour. And if you're around for the weekend, Sea World has fireworks at night (everyday in the Summer). I used to be able to see them from bed in my place in PB.
Scott, I could give you some ideas on clubs, places, resturants, if I had a bit more of your likes, etc, and maybe your age bracket... Oh, and you must go to Symbolic Motors in La Jolla! You will kick yourself if you don't! |
Are there still 'gentlemen's clubs' over by the airport?

Well, it's the wrong time of the year to stay at the Del, it's kinda cold near the water in January. And you have to drive to get to anywhere from Coronado.
|
+1 for the Del. My wife and I stayed there last year for 4 days while the in-laws watched our daughter. We went at the end of April and had a very nice suite in old part of hte hotel facing the ocean.
It was great, but was a little bit more than your self imposed $100 limit. Bill |
Humphreys on Shelter Island is a great place to stay!!!
|
I have been gone for a few days (painting the inside of the front house).
I am a little surprised to the the Del getting so many votes, it is very nice and I have had dinner there. However my dad stayed there and said he would rather stay at new hotel for the money. We are going to do sea world because I have never been there (and it's my birthday) She does want to consider the Del so I will check it out. We both think mission bay or the gas light district would be nice, I'm willing to go up to $150. Red Beard, we are in our 40's, we like blues, classics rock, jazz, anything but NOT loud crowded bars. Steak, seafood, Mexican, Italian, American food. I'll check out Humhreys too. |
You may want to try Hotels.com. I know many that have very good luck with it.
|
Just checked the Del rooms start at $280...
I may go as far as $200 (girlfriend may chip in on room) But Del is no go |
You definitely want to Stay near the Gas Lamp, especially if you want to walk. Mission Bay/Pacific Beach will not hold your interest.
HOLY CRAP. I just checked the prices for Hotels around the area. WOW! You could get a nice place in Cabo for those prices! |
So what would be a good tip on a hotel for the gas lamp area, $100-$200, near live music and good food.
I don't mind driveing to the zoo, seaworld etc. |
