Volvo S70?

In looking for a reasonably priced family / work car I came across a 1998 Volvo s70 with about 60,000miles. Its the basic model no turbo but is otherwise loaded and its a 5spd.

I have read a number of reviews and see a few common complaints of AC problems and electrical problems (lights burning out etc). Most reviews are positive but I am looking for a workhorse so don't want to deal with too many problems. (I don't mind replacing light bulbs)

I just want to know, are Volvo's reliable and this is just bickering and complaining or should I stay away.

thanks!

I love my S60...put 5K into it in maintenance since '01...lights burn out frequently due to the fact that the headlights stay on all the time...easily changed by a knob on the dash. The resale on a '01 S60 sucks, but I plan on keeping it for a long time. Don't know about the S70...check here.

I had a 2000 S70 for two years. It was a great car. FWD but fantastic in snow! We had several snowstorms here in DC and it did just fine.

Some people call it a boring box, but I personally liked the look, clean, sharp.

The only reason I sold it was I really wanted a BMW when we bought it. BMW dealers were closed that day. We drove the Volvo and liked it. Especially my wife since it was replacing her Nissan. When we moved, she thought we needed AWD (it hasn't snowed much since) and I took the opportunity to get the BMW I wanted. But not 5 speed.

I heard a lot of stuff from coworkers, but I bought it with 29K miles and sold it with about 49K miles. I had an alignment and tires and the power mirror switch fixed. Mine was the non-turbo base model. Very sturdy, comfortable. More comfortable than the BMW, and more room.

Check out Swedespeed.com. They have some real fans over there.

I would preffer a BMW to replace my e30 but I would have to get an older or higher mileage one in comparison to the Volvo. I also like the size, a little bigger but not too big.

It looks like the Volvo's value drops like a rock, my concern is ... Why??
