I saw this on Yahoo news this morning. That article said he didn't have theft insurance on it because he said he couldn't afford it. That's just a stupid move in my book. I know times were different back then but still. That was stupid. That would suck making payments on a NEW car without seeing it or driving it.

Saw that on the news, CHP caught it when the guy was trying to ship it internationally. If someone is holding the paper on a vehicle, they require you to have insurance, sort of like the lienholder on your house.

Don't care for vettes, he is giving it to his daughter I guess

The article I saw traced the car back 4 owners...none of which had stolen it.

Probably went to a chop shop. The tranny and gas tank were removed and returned to their owners as well.

The guy in Sweden who bought it and was having it shipped to him is probably out his money.

No, he'll probably have no difficulty getting his money back -- assuming he was paying a "legit" price and was expecting a non-stolen car. The seller will be stuck unless he can collect from whomever he purchased it from, and that person will be stuck unless he can collect from whomever he purchased from, etc., etc.

I don't think the CNN article is accurate, all cars are not checked to see if they're stolen when they are registered -- especially 30+ years ago! Not to mention the lack of checks across state lines.

It would be interesting to learn the history on this car, and it could actually be partially discovered if the seller and previous sellers research it when none of them want to be stuck with having to give back the money.

The original owner who had the car stolen from him, might not be able to keep it cost free either. If someone bought it as a wreck and can prove they made improvements in it to bring it up to its current condition, the actual "recovered" condition as a "wreck" would be all the original owner would be entitled to; he could be required to pay for the improvements if he wants to keep the car.

If this is pursued, the lawyers will probably end up making more than what the car is worth!
