We Like Ike--Feb Vanity Fair Article
Interesting article in the Feb issue of Vanity Fair. I don't subscribe, I was reading it at the lunch counter today at my favorite drug store/soda fountain and I'm too cheap to buy it.
Ike once said, and this is from memory and probably not 100% accurate, that no one should sit in the President's seat who has less knowledge of the military than he did speaking in terms of the Military Industrial Complex. These fears were later expressed in a last speech to Congress in 1961. Here is the text of that speech Military Industrial Complex The writer continues with the thought that America now has as Vice President the most powerful defense contractor of our age. If you consider yourself an American, I would urge you to take the time to read his speech, and think about what he said. Wouldn't hurt to read the magazine article too.

Vanity Fair or Rolling Stone on politics is like the Robb Report or Ladies' Home Journal on cars. Sure, they can have an opinion, but do they really know what they're talking about?
Not to say I know a whole lot about politics, but I'd rather read an article by someone who really knows the political scene. Also, people can speak all they want on Eisenhower's speech, but I find it invalidly applied to today, as we have a shrinking industrial base. We need US manufacturing and nobody but the military appears to support it. |
