tax time....I want to open a 529 this year
I want to open a 529 this year. Anyone have recommendations on who to open the account with? I see the enrollment kits on Fidelity's website, are they just as good as anyone else, or is there someone who stands out and manages these things more effectively? Should I stick with a company who is already managing existing 401K, IRA, FSA, HSA, etc, that I may already have through my employer?
Does it matter what state the account is in if I have no plans to try to send my kid to my Alma Mater or any other specific school. I really don't want to open any kind of account thats managed by the State of Louisiana, but I'm pretty open minded about the other 49 states I know I don't have to be a resident in the state that holds the account, but is one place any better than another? Will I have to file a return in that state every year for interest or earnings? If so, is it better to stay away from states with complicated tax codes like Pennsylvania or Massachusetts?Any thoughts or advice are appreciated. |
