Do Canadian tickets count ??
I posted this on a smaller board here-not much action,,So if I get a ticket in Canada dose my insurance get to know ??
|
Depends on their laws. Oregon had a law that said if an out of state driver was ticketed and did not get another ticket in the state for 6 months, they would dismiss the ticket. Dunno about Canada.

Absolutely not, different country, different laws, no DMV cooperation, they don't communicate with us about terrorists!, you think they care about driving infractions?!!
|
Actaully I think Ontario is one of the only municipalities/states with which New York has reciprocity concerning tickets. They don't even care what happens in new jersey, so go figure. I'd check with your state dmv website before making any assumptions.
|
I was told by my agent that they can only check for tickets in WA state. That was 10 years ago so things may have changed.
|
I have lived all over Canada and gotten tickets in many of it's provinces and they dont even keep track among themselves. I can't imagine they would have any way of finding out about it. Unless of course you tell them. I have had tickets in the US (Florida) (NY) and nothing has ever been done about it. I fly for a living so crossing the border is a weekly event and have never heard a peep. Bigger fish to fry I guess. This post makes me sound like a mad man on wheels but thats not the case. I have had the good luck to be able to drive a lot of nice (ie. fast) cars and the bad luck of seeing a lot of coppers. Things are slower now though, two kids will do that to you.

Gordon,
You are correct. NY has reciprocity with Ontario and Quebec with regard to moving violations. Also, while many states levy points on a New York violation, NY does NOT accept any points from any other state in the union. Only the above Canadian provinces. Strange stuff. |
I have a Michigan ticket on my Ontario license. A real biatch too. When I have to renew my license in 2009, they are going to ding me really hard. My $70 original ticket is going to run me $500 if I don't do something about it....

I have lived in WA and British Columbia. They DO have a reciprocating agreement. I believe OR is also in the mix with BC. The likelihood of being discovered is when you change insurance companies. If you keep your company you might get lucky.
Make sure you pay your ticket though, otherwise that opens up a new can of worms. They could suspend your license in WA for an unpaid BC ticket and not even notify you. You'll find out when you get pulled over. Found on the WA DOT website. RCW 46.23.020 Reciprocal agreements authorized — Provisions. (1) The Washington state department of licensing is authorized and encouraged to execute a reciprocal agreement with the Canadian province of British Columbia, and with any other state which is not a member of the nonresident violator compact, concerning the rendering of mutual assistance in the disposition of traffic infractions committed by persons licensed in one state or province while in the jurisdiction of the other. (2) Such agreements shall provide that if a person licensed by either state or province is issued a citation by the other state or province for a moving traffic violation covered by the agreement, he shall not be detained or required to furnish bail or collateral, and that if he fails to comply with the terms of the citation, his license shall be suspended or renewal refused by the state or province that issued the license until the home jurisdiction is notified by the issuing jurisdiction that he has complied with the terms of the citation. (3) Such agreement shall also provide such terms and procedures as are necessary and proper to facilitate its administration. [1982 c 212 § 2.] |
Don't you just love being governed?

BTW, there is a ton of communication between Canada and the U.S. regarding "terrorists". You are very misinformed. Too much Fox News I suspect. While Canadians as a whole don't agree with flying suspected terrorists to countries that use torture to extract information, our leaders in Ottawa will certainly hunt down people to collect fines and such from our friends to the south. I do get tired of the Canada bashing that exists on many forums in your fine country. We may not agree on many aspects of foreign policy but that is one of the reasons we are very different countries. We have more than a thousand troops fighting along side your boys in Afghanistan to capture and kill the "terrorists" you speak of. Some have given their lives for this cause as I'm sure many more will before this is over. You should think about that before posting your mis-guided opinion. |
I was driving in Canada and got a speeding ticket. As soon as the cop left I ripped it up. They sent me notices to my address but I ignored them, and eventually they just gave up. I'd better not try to enter Canada again though. :) Never resulted in points on my CA record.
Basically, canadian tickets have as much force and authority as the Canadian military. :D |
At the end of a 3000 miles trek Toronto - Mouse World in '95, I got a ticket 5 miles from the border in Buffalo - my kids still laugh about it. I paid in promptly. I didn't want to go to jail 10 years later if/when I get my next ticket stateside - regardless of info sharing . . .
And you're right BigMan_99. Those that don't know of what they speak . . . Ian |
I think only about 70% of it counts

The USA gets bashed so much around here (and around the world) that we feel a need to bash back sometimes. Every Canadian I know who lives here in CA misses no chance to bash the USA. If you can dish it you can take it. :D My jab was meant to be funny, and I do appreciate the help we're getting from Canada in Afghanistan.

And I found it very funny, even hilarious!
Jes... What I like the most of USA and CANADA, is THE DIFFERENCE. Pierre (montreal) |
