Rolex servicing question

A friend of mine keeps telling me servicing a Rolex is unnecessary, that many guys have told him you're fine if you never do it (and never have). Sounds like a wive's tale to me.

I've had my GMT serviced twice since I got it. After the last time (just recently) it runs 2.5 min/month fast. Enough to justify an adjustment? Also, the knob loosens untightens itself every few days.

Thoughts?

I was getting my rolex serviced every 3 years and was told to do it more like every 5+ years. I was also told not to service it unless there is a problem, but, I am a preventative maintenance type so I will stick with a 5-7 year regimen.

I would not worry as much about the 2.5 minutes as I would about the stem loosening up. I have a habit of always checking mine before I jump in any water. That losse stem could cause bigger problems though.I would get that fixed pronto.

Anytime something goes wrong with mine, I just spend a few minutes finding the guy I bought it from in Manhattan, and he gives me a new one for a $10 exchange fee. He's usually on 8th Ave between 43rd and 46th.

If I recall the service interval is 7 years. The reason for this is the oil sluges up after time and can increase wear in the 150 moving parts inside. I think a service runs about $500. I wonder if they offer a loaner while the watch is in the shop. I think I would test wear the Daytona if I had my pick.

I have mine serviced every 7-10 years. Last GMT cost $125 with a retired watchmaker here in Phoenix. The gold one costs a bit more if any parts require replacing.

you should have your watchmaker replace the crown and crown tube. if water gets in , you will have rust!
