Now Here's Some Firepower!

The new and improved M-60 machine gun. In this test, they fired 850 rounds with ONE pull of the trigger. Sustained fire for almost 2 whole minutes!

What do they do to the barrel to keep it from melting/warping?

lendaddy 01-27-2006 06:10 AM

Anti friction coating are getting pretty good.

Question,

Do "normal" M-60's or other pod mounted machine guns have barrel temp sensors with fire interupt?

Yellowbird RS 01-27-2006 08:27 AM

love it!!!

I want mine before the gang bangers get theirs.

targa911S 01-27-2006 12:13 PM

make that 4

Isn't the limit for melting a barrel 600 rpm. They did 850 in 1:45, so they weren't in barrel melting territory yet. Or is it the sustained firing that you guys were talking about?

svandamme 01-27-2006 01:23 PM

pff, for one thing , whoever operates that sucker makes a big target out of himself

for another thing, a jet with bombs can do a better job with less risk.

when it comes to rifles, one shot , one kill, big skill
that's impressive

not a goon pulling a trigger for xxx seconds

svandamme 01-27-2006 01:36 PM

sure Noah
but let's be honest...

pick yer fights, stand off engagements
modern warfare

isn't that what the US military is doing ?

sure , when you need to clear out a building your need hands on firepower

but let's face it , the big gun is pointless, since you can't swing it around in closed door, even an M4 is crap , you want a HK mp5 there

anything else, stand off equipment
nothing like an a 20mm round from an apache to spoil the day
or a paveway/hellfire/maverick/FFAR message if you want to be absolutely convincing

sure this thing has firepower
but it's not the absolute final solution
it's not THAT awesome

you could train a monkey to do this

can you train a monkey to snipe?

svandamme 01-27-2006 01:54 PM

i think you underestimate monkeys :D

}{arlequin 01-27-2006 02:05 PM

i started giggling halfway through the vid. :D

wonderful stuff

masraum 01-27-2006 02:54 PM

That's not firepower! This is firepower...

http://metalstorm.com/clientuploads/directory/videos/ms_36barrel_mpg.zip

Download the zip file and the video is in the zip file. 36 barrels, 1,000,000 rounds per minute.

djmcmath 01-27-2006 03:03 PM

SVanDamme, you're right -- the application of this kind of firepower is limited. That said, when you need to put 800 rounds downrange right now, it helps to have a tool that's capable of that. Close air support is definitely more convenient -- I don't have to haul a helicopter into the field with me, like I do a -60. At the same time, Murphy's Law says that if what I really need is an aviator, said pilot is most likely knocking back martinis while complaining about how he only gets 43 channels of cable in his s***ty Arab hotel, and that what I'm actually going to have handy is whatever tool I drug into the field on my back.

svandamme 01-27-2006 03:16 PM

see, that's why they stuck "aviators" on aircraft carriers... to keep em out of range of said Martini's , makes sense, doesn't it?

djmcmath 01-27-2006 05:07 PM

And I always thought CVNs were about force projection. I didn't realize it was all about separating the pilots from their alcohol to ensure a more efficient fighting force. You're brilliant, Stijn. ;)
