Toyota Exhaust Cavitation
Ever since I got a new muffler on my '90 Corolla, the exhaust hiccups when I am at idle. Not a whole lot, just enough to tick me off. It sounds and feels very similar to a misfire, but I know this is not the case. It is just the exhaust building up and then farting because it doesn't have the pressure to go through the muffler smoothly. At any RPM's greater than idle, it completely goes away.
Can anything simple cure this?

Take it back and say WTF???? It wasn't doing that with the old muffler. Maybe, they'll replace it with a different brand at no charge.

Some cars just have odd-sounding idles, maybe the old muffler just masked the sound?
How's it running? Could be a little after-fire in the manifold if rich. How many miles? Could be time for a valve-job, the old dollar bill over the tailpipe would let you know if an exhaust valve isn't sealing fully. |

Could be the old muffler was masking some noise, but I have had 3 mufflers and this is the first one to do this. I'll try the dollar bill trick. Fuel filter and sparks are new, as well as the cap, rotor and wires. Seems to be running pretty clean, but I should check the books, I can't remember the last time I had a tune up. Unfortunately my toyota has been getting a lot less attention lately than my 911.....Funny how that works. BTW, 1990, 148,XXX miles
Thanks

Have a '90 with 22X,XXX miles. Never heard of such a thing. But the aftermarket mufflers are all crap. None of them last that long. The airpump can be quite noisy at times...

Yep... when I replaced the (original) muffler on my 91 Corolla a couple years ago, I noticed the same thing. I used a cheapie $40 aftermarket muffler.
It was a beater, So I didn't much care.
