I suggest that the next time you go to a restaurant (fairly upscale), ask to speak to the chef.
More than likely, the chef will be more than happy to have you sample the delicate taste of a truffle.
From then on, you'll know the flavor, texture and taste of truffles.
It is not necessarily an "acquired" taste as in fine whisky's or single malts but more of a "what is that distinctive flavor/taste".
