Any US Navy Divers here?

I spend more time lurking here than posting (as you can see from my post count) but I thought I would solicit you folks for a little bit of advice.

Currently I am an E-6 in the Navy working as a corrections officer in the Seattle area. I have about 7 years in the service, and I am fast approaching the time when I need to decide to stay in or get out. My experience in the surface navy hasn't been the best, and until a few months ago I was planning on walking away when my enlistment was up.

Here is my dilemma. I don't necessarily want to give up on this organization, I think I may just need to see a different part of it. I've about had it with the way things have been going. Either I'm getting old, or the quality of people we are getting in keeps getting worse and worse. I'm tired of people who are junior to me who don't want to work for their paycheck. I'm also at a point where I am tired of butting my head against the good ol boy network that is the senior enlisted community in the surface Navy.

Bottom line is this... I am considering applying for Navy Dive and Salvage training before I get too old, or too senior to apply for these programs. Are there any active or retired divers running around on the board? What are the advantages of the dive community over the surface community? What are the disadvantages?

Thanks for your time

Years ago knew a retired "hard hat" diver. Very good community and he loved it.

Hope someone on the forum chimes in. I know that there are several divers on the forum. Was just in the Red Sea area and could not get wet due to decompression times (was flying) and it really hurt. Nothing like being underwater, a totally different world.

late to the post but I'm a diver in the gulf and I work with alot of navy guys., but wasn't in the navy, just went to dive school in '97. That said, since the hurricanes most companies are paying for school tuition and either giving a hat or have a program.
Money is for sure better out here than in there.
You have to really want to do it though. Sometimes it sucks.
PM me if you want to know anything else.
