A Great Shot into the Mouth of Hell (3700F)

Was at a Ni refinery last week in Northern Onterio Canada. The shot below is of liquid nickel right before a pour. The heat was around 3700F - pretty toasty! Each pour is worth $1.8 million. Before the refinery tried our grease for the bearings that control the turn, they were losing a pour every 5th week do to bearing failure from grease issues. The bearings alone cost about $30K and the gears (pinion and wheels) cost another $15K. The started using our stuff in September and have not lost one pour or bearing!

I just love it when a plan comes together...

I'm sure you've done the math, but it looks like you are saving them $18,450,000.00/year!

and don't think that won't make the Northern Miner Newspaper! The work on the crushers underground is even more mind blowing. The money we have saved them is just plain sick. And to think, Exxon actually engineered products specially for them that sucks and had the nutbag to charge them through the wazoo for it! It is such a rush when this ***** works that you spent so much time and energy at.

We thought it was cool saving Pilgrims Pride over $3.6 Million in 4 years. That's chicken feed compared to this (ouch - bad pun...)

You're not too popular with the folks who make the bearings and gears, though.

You have to make Vegas. That steak dinner is starting to smell rather good from where I sit!

Mike,

How in the world do you guys formulate lubricant to stand up to that type of heat? Do they lube the gears and bearings in-between each heat?

Joe

Ok - when you settle in let me know. We have mineral based and synthetic. I would go with the mineral based for true technical forum reasons.

Joe - actually, I told them they could cut back 20% when they switched to ours. Pretty ballzy but I have spent too many days and nights working this stuff in the worst of conditions and it has done the trick.

The thing is, many tribologists (lube dudes) think that the viscosity of the base oil dictates the overall performance of the grease - WRONG! Thats thinking in terms of hydroelsaticity theory which I do not preport. The pressures that bearings experience is in the neighborhood of 250,000 to 300,000 psi. Thats a tough neighborhood. The base oils in the grease will squeeze out - which is one of many reasons why bearings fail.

That being understood, wouldn't it seem to make more sense to actually develop a grease with a higher solids content that didn't squeeze out, didnt char and actually provided a lubricating film at very hugh pressures and temps?? Many well educated scientists and engineers have disagreed with this idea and claim all sorts of reasons why it is fool hardy and never had the sack to understand it or try it.

A few of us did and after many attempts at it we came upon a rather interesting phenom. I have presented my findings at STLE and NLGI (go a google for the Leon-Maxwel Equation). Soem where skeptical until I started taking biz at 100% from all of them. During my presentaions I have even challenged my competition to trading customer lists. You mind as well give to to me now and prepare because I will get your share then some! I am a cocky beotch but real fun to listen to. Now they are scrambling.

Laugh now little men! Laugh at me now!!! MWAHHAAAAAAHHHAAAAHHHAAA!!!

Thats really cool... ah er... Well, you know!
Would you be using something like a high graphite proportion to get lubrication at the temps (1000 degrees or so?)on the bearings?
A combustion chamber on a 911 is a pretty benign place compared to a smelter.
Great work!

Les - yup, a particular grade of graphite as well as a very fine technical grade moly and a few other things as well as a very pure synthetic base oil. The trick was to load it up and still get it to flow accordingly.

I hope you have a good patent attorney. I suspect they'll reverse engineer your product and use their market share to squish you out of existence...or buy you out and quash the creativity. I call it the Microsoft syndrome...

It is patented fer sure plus most all lube co's sell on price - you can't make this stuff cheap so they have no clue how to sell it. Plus there are a few things that would make it very tough to reverse engineer - that is the first thing you think of. Remember, I came from the world of high competition materials...messing with techno geeks heads in the analytical labs is something I get my jollies from.

But really at the end of the day, good ideas are a dime a dozen. It is all about getting it done and far too many companies have their heads up their arse.
