anyone ever been a broker's assistant?
I was considering a postion as a broker's assistant and was wondering if anyone had any experience in that area? The. place is in Brentwood and they are a commodities firm
Thanks, |
My wife was a stock broker and I did a lot of consulting work for brokers years ago.
Involuntary Servitude. Be prepared to kiss a$$, make cold calls, fetch coffee, make cold calls, schedule lunch, make cold calls, etc. Unless you are an integral part of a super-star broker's biz dev team, you are lower than the receptionist, and on an hourly basis, paid less. Unless this is a truly exceptional opportunity or the industry has undergone a transformation in the last decade, I'd avoid it. Why are you interested? |
What Don said. A friend of mine is a broker's assistant. Basically he just gets crapped on all day.

sweet. I'm trying to break into the front-office side. I've been on the west coast for four months...with no job. So I figure, if it sucks, I haven't really lost much. If I think I like it, then I'm on to something.
I'm going for a half-day tomorrow. I already asked about the coffee. The guy I would be working with doesn't drink it. So then I mentioned doughnuts and those were declined as well. So I'm okay there - hahaha. Cold calls, I really don't mind so much. They get old but so does almost any given aspect of the job. Paid less - that is true... |
You could always be a greeter at the Mega-Lo-Mart. At least you get to wear that cool vest.
On the good side, at least down in Newport, the office gals tend to be hot. If you work like dog (which eliminates the office gals thing), you might impress the manager enough to send you to camp. But it's a long-shot. They'd rather bring in someone which a book than train a newbie. Why not commercial real estate? Home Loans? If you are trying to get into the financial service industry, Insurance isn't a bad path. Good Luck! |
