I fell for this crap back in the 90's. I was a route driver. One day a customer, kinda cute gal, asks me if I would be interested in making some extra money. (I thought maybe a gigolo job would be pretty cool.)
Uh, no. She knew I was into cars so she sent her husband to talk to me. He was an engineer at GM and owned a Grand National. I asked him upfront if this was Amway and he told me no. We went to our first motivational meeting and I think the last sentence from the speaker was"..and this exciting product is Amway. Oh, I was pi$$ed!!!!
My wife (ex now) decided to try it. What a joke!! I only shelled out 100.00 but ended up having to drive 100 miles each week to pick up the products. It lasted exactly two months. Ironically, we do the food service at Amway in Grand Rapids. I still get asked to go to a meeting now and again. I just tell them "no thanks" and move on.

A guy at work got into the vitamin thing. I forget which company. They did have decent vitamins, and an energy supplement that had Ephedra. I tried some of it and really liked it, but when I started checking the cost of the stuff it was expensive unless you were already a muckety muck in the ladder.
I don't have an extra $7/day I want to spend on each member of my family (of 7) for vitamins and I sure would feel bad asking anyone else to do it either so I bailed. He bought in to the muckety muck level with $40k to get the better purchase prices. Now it's a few years later and he's wishing he hadn't :(
Yeah, koolaid, complete with all the high pressure, high energy, "You can do it!" sales hype tapes. Yuck!!

The best way to get rich is with a crock pot, not a microwave. Use time and money and interest to your advantage instead of as a liability.

3 buddies of mine got sucked into "Equinox". They carried everything from "all-natural"toothpaste to "memory enhancing" vitamins to water filters.

Each month I would get the call "come on, I can get you in at the 5,000 level for 2,000"--etc. etc.

Hard sell speak "in 5 years 90% of homes are going to have water filters, do you want to be on the buying or the selling end of that"

I would just laugh--it didn't help that the products sucked. I tried the toothpaste--tasted like baking soda right out of the box. The funniest were the "sink water filters"--first, the things were as big as a percolating coffee pot, then when you would flip the valve for the tap water to run through the filter, the pressure was zilch--it would literally take 2 mins to get a glass of water.

They would come back from the "sales meetings" all jazzed up, speaking about how the founder was on an uplink from his ranch in Nevada, etc. etc.

I still kid those guys about their year of brain lapse.:D

My Ex bro-in-law used to sell NSA water filters. He actually did really well. Now he is a bigwig at a firm that is a "legal" commission/pyramid scheme, processing credit cards......makes a ****load of residuals off of cards processed off of processing systems he and his downstream sold.

I don't fall for it. A few years ago an older gentleman stopped me in Barnes and Noble and asked me about the Porsche magazine and garage design book. We talked for a few minutes about my desire to build a bigger garage and buy a 930.

I was surprised to get a call out of the blue from the guy a month or so latter. I didn't give him my phone number. He asked if I'd like to make some extra money so I could build my garage and buy the 911. He didn't have much to say when I told him money was not my problem but finding time to build the garage was. BTW, I've built the bigger garage and bought the 930.
