Prepaid cell phone?

Anyone have experience with prepaid cell phones?

I'd like to get my son a phone (he's almost 11) so that he can call me anytime, without having to ask his mother for her phone. She lives with her couple hours away. Don't know if I should look into prepaid, or look into a third phone on my current Altel plan.

I have one for my wife. She only wants a cell phone for emergencies so she hardly ever uses it. I looked at all the major plans out there and went with Virgin Mobile. Easy to set up their phone through their very intuitive website. And the phone is easy to use.

Kurt, can you roll over minutes? If so, for how long?

The minutes roll over as long as you "top up" the phone with $20 dollars worth of minutes every 90 days.

I got a prepaid for my daughter when she was younger. It was great cause I didn't have to sweat finding a $200 bill in the mail cause she went berzerk with the minutes. We gave her a set amount of minutes each month and told her if she ran out of minutes before she ran out of month, she had to buy more minutes herself. She learned how to moniter herself and eventually graduated to a regular phone.
