Attending Broadway Solo?
I know we talked about going solo to the movies not long ago, with relatively undesirable conclusions for a single guy. So I thought I'd ask: Is it considered socially unacceptable to attend a Broadway musical unescorted?
See, here's the situation. I'm only in the Northeast for 6 months, so most girls of sufficient calibre to enjoy a trip into NYC for a musical are loathe to commit that kind of time to a man who's leaving in a few months anyway. I feel awkward going to a musical alone, but I really enjoy them. I'm sure that one of the guys I work with would go with me, but we'd have to show up holding hands and skipping, and I'm really not into that. Thoughts? Comments from the peanut gallery? |

But seriously, go life is too short to waste on worrying what other people think and besides. 1. You will be in a strange town surrounded by people you don't know and probably will never see again so who cares what they think. 2. Even if someone did notice you your in a metropolitan area where most people don't give a flip about you sexual orientation anyway. So much ado about nothing... just go and enjoy the show. |
That's kind of my thought, but it helps to hear it from someone else. I mean, he's got such a nice a$$, I'd hate to pass it up for public opinion, right? ;)

I used to be self concious about dining alone and go out alone too. After being married for 16 years and having 2 kids going out alone is a treat. Go alone, never know who you might meet during intermissions. |
You will have a great chance of getting the best seats at last minute and many New Yorkers go to shows alone just for that reason. It's New York, anything goes if you have the balls for it in the Big Apple.

Dan,
Glad to see you have a sense of humor... after I posted that I had second thoughts. I travel a bunch for work and usually end up going out on the town by myself or with a male co-worker, really doesn't bother me anymore. Amusing story: Helping friend drive moving van to Oregon, stopped in central California farm town at night and got separate rooms (he farts allot). Go out walking downtown looking for a beer (town was right out of the forties). Pass on the cowboy bar (lady at front desk advised against it) I see neon a half block away "that looks like a bar, let's go". It's like 40 degrees out and we are freezing our asses off. We get to the bar and look in, they got a list of micro brews on tap, TV's with monday night football on , a cute little hottie for bartender, the place is decorated with bamboo, fake palm trees, surfboards. My friend "looks like a gay bar" Me "WTF there is a girl bartender, they are watching football, they got good beer on tap, AND I'm freezing, I'm going in!" There were only two guys in the bar and they were flirting with the bartender. We throw back a few cold ones and my buddy decides to go back to the room. I hang out, there were a few more beers I wanted to try and the bartender wasn't hard to look at. I end chatting with her and she tells me... "This is a new bar in town... well it's remodeled and under new management... some guy tryed to open it as a gay bar but it wouldn't fly in this part of the country"   |

I go to Atlanta once a week on business alone--love going to dinner, hitting the bars. Hoping to catch the Black Crowes at the Fox Theater...solo.

Absolutely do it. Great way to get a good seat cheap from one of those last minute places, (oddball single seat in front), and life is about going places and seeing things, IMO. If you always have perfect companionship at your side, great, but don't ever let being alone stop you from experiencing something.

Just bought my ticket for the Black Crowes, staying right across the street at the Georgian Terrace. Can't wait!

Dan,
I bet one of my brothers could set you up with a broadway date that would actully turn out pretty good and chances are the chick might be cool with you being a short timer. Chris lives in Old Lyme and Mark is in Waterford - both have wives with many friends that are single. PM me and I will get it rolling for you. |
Mike, I've had a grand total of 2 blind dates that worked out well, so the part of me that does Operational Risk Management is saying that's probably a poor choice. .... but I never learn. You have a PM.
